Military Sizes

Military Sizes

Postby Darrk » Thu Mar 08, 2018 8:47 am

Hello,
So looking at the the start of the story we see this image of the "Entire Sharen Army.":

It doesn't look especially big.

Meanwhile the Sarghress talk a lot about there Legions, traditionally in the Roman Empire, Legions consisted of 5248 combat troops.

So I was wondering how many troops are in the army of the Sharen (Before and after the prologue), compared to other clans like the Val'Sarghress?

According to this: http://www.drowtales.com/mainarchive.php?sid=8377

The Sarghress have an army of roughly around 12 thousand (or did at that point, they might have grown or shrunk since then) compared to a Sharen army of 3000 - though as Sarnel points out, the 3000 figure does not include mercenaries or slave soldiers. Even Sarnel leaves out the Belds and Sharen minor clan allies, then again the Sul and Sarghress minor clan allies are not counted either.

We don't get a clear number on how many those are, but generally speaking we usually see a lot of mercenaries for every Sharen in the field.

Notably, Zala brought 500 Sharen warriors to Naq, which was said to be half her line, so overall she has 1000 troops. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest were split up between 1000 Sarv line troops, and 1000 Nishi and vassal house troops (and maybe some Silice line troops who got left behind)

It is worth noting that Silice and Nishi's lines were devastated during the Nid war, and the vassal houses took a big hit as well, so the Sharen army might have been as much as 6000 before the Nid wars.

Also, here: http://www.drowtales.com/mainarchive.php?sid=8025 we can see that the Jieyen have 3 times Zala's 500, so 1,500 overall.

Interestingly, despite having a reputation as a peaceful clan, the Illhardro might have the second biggest army behind the Sarghs - most of their army sat out their civil war, yet the coup forces held out for a while against the Jieyen, Balhv, Sharen, and loyalist illhardro.

Beyond this, we don't get a lot of hard numbers - the only other things I can remember is that the Black Sun combined outnumber any Chelian clan (but they rarely work as one - though the Earth tribe alone seem to have been the most common troops on the Sharen side of the last conflict), and that in the (non-canon) Path to Power, the TK clan were considered powerful by minor clan standards for having 50 warriors. Most minor clans apparently have no standing troops and rely upon mercenaries to fight their battles.

If these numbers all seem small...well, don't forget the vast majority of the people discussed are coming from the population of one city state, and most armies are primarily members of a single bloodline. And it is their big weakness against the Hermoine - the humans can just field vastly larger armies and recover from losses more quickly.

The truly interesting thing about those numbers is how shockingly low they are for the Sharen given their age.

Even assuming Sarv'swati's family was very conservative(a fair assumption) she should have had far more descendants than 1000 in ~800 years. - And that says nothing about Zala'ess who while "only" 500 should have waaay more descendants than a mere grand. It just goes to show how much fighting/infant mortality/dangerous shit like cave ins etc, went on I suppose.

Well, Diva is over a thousand years old and only has like six or seven kids directly. She might be an exception, but it does seem that even if drow remain fertile their whole lives, many of them tone down the kids after a while. Though admittedly Sarv has at least daughter in the age range of the main cast.

Plus, it isn't like this is the first war the Sharen have had - I bet even with their reputation for badassery that they have taken plenty of causalities before.

Oh, and I suppose this only counting the female line of descent. It would be interesting to see how much various clans would grow if you included male line descendants.

But yeah, overall it is pretty interesting with a lot of implications about the society.
