THE FOOD GROUP!!! HELP FIGHT HUNGER!!!

Postby Lumini on Thu Jun 09, 2011 5:39 am

...Okay, so, I don't really wanna go hungry, and I'm sure you don't want to go hungry, so, in the interest of good grub, I am organizing...

THE FOOD GROUP!!!
Thanks to Avidavi for the awesome eggplant banner!

Here, we can plan strategies for keeping our tummies from rumbling!Details of particular projects will be discussed and volunteered for. We will be working with the Farmer's Club, GUTF, the Warriors and the Techs on some of these projects.

METHODS OF FOOD GETTING

    ~Farming
The most obvious long-term solution for hunger is to farm. This will be the longest, most difficult project, but also the most worth-while. As far as I can tell, the Nals seem to have already given us some seed, so, In order to have an effective farm we need to:
A) A farmhouse, meant for storage in the long term, and defense against a certain flying terror in the short term.
B) Probably a wall
C) Do the dirty work. 6 votes each week will be needed to maintain acceptable efficiency.
D) Study the plants. We were told we needed to carefully watch what grew well and what did not.
E) Eventually build a bridge to F-21 for easier access.

    ~Fishing
We were good at this back in There'avre. I'm sure we can put together some great fishing trips again. And if we fish from the shore, we don't need a 6-vote party to pull it off, which is always good. In order to Fish effectively, we need:
A) Tools of the trade. Nets, poles, tridents/spears, boats, all that good stuff. Since we have a bunch of rope, nets and poles are probably the best thing to start with. Boats will take the longest, but it will also give us the most long-term gain. If you want to help make boats, talk to the Techs.
B) Ice Sorcery or a lot of wood to make a good pier to fish from, and eventually a port.
C) To scout out a shallow, fish-attracting area, and/or make one ourselves

    ~Foraging
We are aware that lots of berries and edible plants exist in the area. These fruits need to be searched for so that we can eat them, and use them as seed for our farm. In order to effectively forage we need to:
A) Send out at least 6 people, as we would probably be leaving F-20
B) Defend ourselves. Either with warrior escorts or by asserting that we brought weapons and armor with us.
C) Make baskets. Unless you wouldn't mind staining your clothes with berry juice! :P

    ~Hunting
Hunting has served us well in the past. A team of 6 people seem to be able to take down a day's worth of food, even without training or proper equipment. In order to hunt effectively, we need to:
A) Send out 6 people per week. There is no good hunting in F-20 what with our racket. :D
B) Build moccasins and camouflage-y clothing for stealth. (We can build these things out of old pelts, which would also cut our scent.)
C) Train ourselves. The more often we do this, the better effective we will become.
D) Build bows and Arrows. (Or shotguns. But I doubt we could get away with inventing shotguns. }:3 )
E) Educate ourselves. I bet the Halms know all about hunting, and maybe even about breeding. And I bet they'd teach us in return for healer's services or something of value.
F) Build a light, portable smokehouse for longer hunting trips, so our kills stay edible.

    ~Trapping
This is currently being handled quite well by GUTF. If you want to participate in the trapping, taming, and husbandry of the local animals, follow my link above to join them! *bigsmile*

    ~Trading
If all else fails, we have three known cities to trade with. (And a fourth yet to be explored.) If and when we start collecting a valuable resource, we can trade it for seed, food, and farming/hunting equipment. In order to be effective traders, we need to:
A) Be VERY nice. Building a good reputation with all three cities is very important for a variety of reasons. This is one of them. ;)
B) Have a service or resource to offer. We know that they would love to have ore, but so far we have none.
C) Send at least 6 people, and probably more like 10. The trek to the Halm cities will be long and dangerous unless and until we build roads to them.
D) Educate ourselves. Somebody has to learn Halm. And Krotorc. And probably Ferral too.

    ~Storage
Obviously, once we get the food, we have to be able to keep it. In winter especially, we'll be depending on cured, treated, and preserved food. This is another skill we could probably learn from the Halms or the Nals. In order to store food effectively, we have to:
A) Build a smoke-house. This will cure the meant and make it last longer.
B) Build a barn and silo for storing farmed and foraged goods
C) Learn to pickle and preserve, whether with ceramic jars, or glass made with Fire affinity and sand.
D) Trade for preservatives and spices until we can grow them ourselves.
E) Guard the food. We know at least the raccoon-ferrals will try to steal it.
F) Ice sorcery. I don't know how we're going to get it, but it would be damn useful.

    -~Other?
This forum is for expressing YOUR ideas! I'm sure this is not an exhaustive list. Any new ideas would be quite welcome!

Here's to many feasts in the future!

This is a great start Lumini!

With the farming do we need a continuous 6 people on it each turn?

Fishing and algae collection was successful in PTP1, given that this is something that the clan is already familiar with should we focus on producing nets and fishing?

I think we may need to consider a cycle of different food production in line with the seasons?

fishing.

Immediate Action and Gain:
Making an artificial pier by making a thick ice sheet with Ice sorcery.
Ice fishing on said ice peir.

Few turn Action and Gain:
Construction of fishing nets.
Construction of fishing tridents.
Locating natural shallow areas along shore.
Preserving of fish though smoking, salting or freeze drying with ice sorcery.
Construction of permanent wooden pier.
Construction of small general purpose boats for net fishing in lake.

Long-term gain:
Construction of shallows for fish to gravitate to and breed in closer to home.
Enhancement of shallows with covered varied sized irregular sized piers simulating downed logs for same purpose.
Construction of port facilities for dedicated fishing boats.

Augmentation to hunting.
Construction of collapsible small smoke house using wooden planks for smoke box and clay for burn box. whole unit should be 1 man carry (less then 100lbs on backpack)

organization: 6 man team: 2 guard meat/operate smoker/night watch/medic, 2 teams of 2 bow armed hunters
Secondary function of picket sentry, sending mana blast spread up to signal as incoming danger to the city and direction of threat.
Upon encounter of threat team immediately reforms at camp, abandons all equipment not immediately useful to stealth and ranged combat and will function as light harassing unit attempting to cause enemy to follow away from settlement, giving enemy location update every hit and fade attack. (5 shoot arrows 1 shoot mana blast up then all immediately retreats)

Sorry, we have no ice sorcery. Right now the best means of immediate action is a hunt and foraging. And both have been posted into EA.

Yep, foraging has gained six votes so far on Trey'la Rahisi's suggestion, yay! Hopefully this will be a fairly successful action now we have some knowledge of local plants.

Laerei Nimaraidh has got 2 votes support for the hunting trip but I think he has worded the suggestion well and this should gain traction to get six votes at least

I think we also need to see a continuation of farming, none has posted one yet but I assume it will be put up by the team already farming.

I would like to see a "make a fishing net" option go up so we could have a crack at fishing the turn after. To this end I am going to try and support Timotheus Kahalla'kar suggestion of the rope making, but supervise the making nets part to make sure it happens. I am doing this purely on the basis that I think Timotheus may be trying to cram too much into one suggestion and previous experience has shown that this isn't always successful?

Given that we are now on a week long turn, if we try a number of different food gathering strategies we should get a good idea of what is going to get us the best returns in the short/medium term.

From what I've seen, the farming went off with a decent start. But with the current way, it's going to drop. And being the only person with his mind on farming is not something I'd like. What's needed is more farming-type people to put in their suggestions and votes.

Heck, huddling in fear at night from strange forest sounds?

All I can say is to continue the test field creation then set up night watches. But for that, we need more than 8 votes for.

We got the two dugout shelters from the Colony 5 update ready. Someone should put in an action which says that we gonna use them as storage rooms for our preserved food. We can use the ice magic of our Harvesters to cool down the room or at least one of them.

Action could be worded like this:

*Prepare dugout shelters to house the preserved food.*

We could add *using/with ice magic/etc.* but i don´t think that´s needed. Plus since we´ve got a week now, one or two or three people would be enough to bring our preserved food this week into the new storage rooms.

@Insanity

If i get 5 more votes you farmers will have a wood house with a wall around it next week, so no worries. Expect i don´t get those 5 votes till Monday ofc, then you can worry about being eaten by wild animals. :P

But please continue with the farming as it is a longtermed action like the Nal expert said. We need someone to look for the fields and keep them in check everyday. So far you´ve prepared the ground for farming now we need to put the seeds in and make some sorts of saftey for them against animals/birds like walls and scarecrow. :3

Wow. I don't think I've said "Oh duurrr!!" at myself more times in a short time-frame. XD Okay! I'm going to add these suggestions to the list, and make a separate list of things that need to be suggested and voted on -this week-.

Yes. Farming counts as a traveling group, and it thus it needed 6 votes at least in order to leave the camp. And if you look here...

Thalar wrote:Projects that go outside of the colony site (and require 6+ to do so) ought to have 6+ votes to be most effective the following turn(s) as well.

I've put something along those lines (without even checking the forum first, I should be ashamed >.> ). However I focused on a different aspect than ice-preservation:

Move food (Dugout Shelter), organise permanent guard. May be thieves

The food was said to last for MONTHS. This was way too quick and I don't think we can ignore the possibility of people (or feral or otherwise) stealing from our stocks. I don't know if asking to establish a permanent guard will work, but it definately won't hurt to try.

I feel another Dragoneye 'hunting trip' coming on... Maybe well kill a few of those birds to bring back after we've finished the mapping mission... I can see the team doing a lot of 'hunting trips', not only do we get food out of it, but we also get to practice useful (ranged) combat skills and the like...
