Ein'keos' Earthworks

Postby Ein'keos on 21 Aug 2010, 19:06

Welcome to the builder's thread! I'm Ein'keos, the Architect and leader of the builders.

WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT DOING THIS WEEK:

Retreating to the mine.

I encourage you to comment on the above project and give suggestions about how to improve it or clarify the corresponding action. I also encourage you to post novel ideas about things we can build, contribute designs for buildings, or suggest ways to improve previously contributed designs. I won't promise to implement your ideas, but I will give each one a fair chance and try to give you a good explanation as to why I'm not using an idea if I choose not to use it. The name of the game here is participation, so feel free to speak your mind, even if you aren't a builder, and be creative in your thinking.

THIS WEEK'S ACTION

Next action: To ground
Rank: Architect

PRIMARY ACTION ATTEMPT: Dig a defense of ditch
SHOW: Eldri'caldeyi and Ein'keos

This hour we'll begin digging a defensive ditch around the entrance to the mine. We'll break the stone with our sledgehammers and pile it behind the ditch to create a small defensive embankment. We are aiming to make this a project we can finish in two hours and will alter the depth of the ditch and the height of the embankment behind it to make this possible. The goal of the ditch and raised stone "wall" behind it is to make any surprise charges against the mine break momentum and in so doing provide defending forces with an advantage and time to evacuate people behind the mine doors.

Resources requested: Sledgehammer (10), Shovel (11), Helmet: worker (11),

I wanna join the builders.:P Also bring the other 2 pack lizards to bring in extra rocks to be used. We might as well start make the road a simple gravel road. and flatten the entire road that means cut off or outright flatten hills and such to make walking as safe as possible for the settlers.

Your request to be hired has been added to the action. Regarding the two pack lizards, I'm afraid the Supply Master has already decided to use them for clay harvesting this turn, and as I'm not sure if road building will be rock intensive I'm willing to just try and get by with one. As far as the technique with gravel and hills go, since this is our very first attempt to build a road I thought I'd start simple and general by saying "the highest quality we can make" and see what he throws at us. If it looks like we'll have to get creative and come up with solutions of the type you mention, I'll be all over it, but as is I'm going to try and see if that stuff can just be hand waved as small details.

Don't forget to 'place' the bridge we completed last turn, and a map (or statement) of where the road is going to and fro would probably help a lot.

Far as I recall, there was a road from Chel that lead to the mine (Quel found it, way back). Perhaps you can tag your road onto that?

And excellent! You took my advice for the title. I loves me some alliteration, so consider me pleased.

There are several maps with routes to chel shown on it. I have a couple if you want them. If you need more transport you should ask, we use the other two lizards normally because they are there. you can also think about using the mining golems for material transportation. Asking the mana specialist to help you make a large road roller might be a good idea too for helping the construction process. A big stone roller pulled by a pack lizard (shades of the Flintstones!) seems like something you'll be needing. At least drainage won't be a problem.

Here's the road route as best as I can determine it from the text. I can modify it any way you want.

I know the builders are bizzy but you are the only one's not to go to Ortho so maybe you would like to go for earth mana. It could help you build a little faster.

Mmm. We already have earth mana, and Kern doesn't go for direct 'skill upgrades' like that (not last I heard, anyway, the miners got burned on that, didn't they?). We'd have to pick a more specific, and useful, mana skill/aspect to learn (for example, I believe the miners learned how to locate/dig-out iron better, which as a result increased their productivity in that field).

It's up to Ein'keos when we'll go and what we'll learn. I did, in my latest List, suggest we could try learning rock strengthening techniques, so our buildings end up being sturdier. There are other options, probably. They have to fit as abilities within the drowtales universe, but there's plenty of things that should do that.

When the miners learned earth sorcery they were able to more easily separate the iron ore from the rock, increasing productivity.

I hadn't exactly forgotten about it so much as I was just waiting on one last bit of info from Tim before deciding on the location. I have that info now and it'll be at I3.

It was on the page I've linked below if anyone's curious to look. I don't know if it's been retconned or not but I guess it wouldn't hurt to mention it in the action, thanks for the advice.

Depending on how things go in the next update I'm hoping to go next turn, but security concerns are mounting so we might be needed for extra fortifications before the war. I'd like to go ASAP though. If I recall correctly Writer e-mailed Kern awhile ago about what Earth training would do for us and he said it wouldn't make us go any faster but it'd increase the quality of our work. If it boosts production I will be pleasantly surprised.

You're right, my memory must be faulty, I guess. Comic's here: http://www.drowtales.com/~pathtopower/a ... p?sid=5979

We paid 220 ada for that. Yeek.

Regarding fortifications, there's always repairing the tower...

And guh. I can't recall that at ALL. A quick check through my primary mail and PMs confirms that I've gotten no word from Kern on earth mana through those channels, though. Must've been somewhere else, if that's the case.

They're putting it through our council fire circle. The Harvester Scouts will have to find a new place for their ceremonies.
