Sorry for not being around so much. Last time I came I'd lost my ability to post and then have just been lazy. I am here though. Gratz on the promotion, boss. :3

Someone on the shoutbox brought up the possibility of the Black Sun clan being the mystery clan. This seems unlikely for a number of reasons (poor equipment, not seeming to be their normal methods, Nal-connected merchants not knowing the mark, etc) but other things make it seem possible (their logo does kinda look like a sun with the disc and they seem aggressive).

The MA page mentioning the Black Sun says they are extremely numerous and armed to the teeth. It would seem unlikely that their equipment would be that poor... but for all we know those front people could just be a lure to make people think they're weak when all their other weapons are top notch. Kern mentioned that there could be any number more of them further down the tunnel. Also maybe the Black Sun do have poor weapons and simply win by numbers. Maybe the merchants don't know them just because the Nal have never felt the need to inform them of this threat.

Whether that is the clan or not, it made me think that this could be a very dangerous situation indeed. As has been stated, they could have any number of backup either there or that can be sent for. They could be hiding anything in the building and beyond. They have had not only the guts to build a toll station there but have watched our warriors train without flinching in their position. They are not friendly. I hope Xenon's escort will be sufficient to avoid another Siksa'santi incident with our last well-meaning ambassador.

And this could be a little late in the conversation, but perhaps the original plan in the Siksa'santi situation should be attempted here: maybe we should just send one person with a diplomatic letter BEFORE sending armed-yet-potentially-vulnerable peeps into their hands. At the very least Xenon should specify in her action that we do not get near enough to be surrounded. They should be approached very carefully from as far a distance as possible for safety.

Thanks Jethal, good to have you back then. ^^

I have seen Kern's intent and considered which scouts are likely to be at risk of dissapearing, we shouldn't be hit too hard, but it is possible. Kern said it would happen soon, not immediately, so I'm hoping that is not this turn. But in case it is, I am also going to include caveats in the action to ensure the scouts required in the Steel Delivery and Toll Collector situation are there, I don't want to willingly reduce the number at the watchtower though.

I don't like splitting the forces like this, but given the time lines it is unavoidable and I stated as much to Madea when I volunteered to take the steel delivery. We either annoy the Sharen or ignore the Toll Collecters, neither is a tempting prospect. Judging by the timing though, I'd speculate that Kern has thrown the Toll Collecters in as a distraction, knowing that the clan tends to focus on whichever option is shinyest at any given time. It's a distraction that is almost certainly going to develop, but at the moment, a distraction.

I'll be back in a couple of hours and try and post up a draft of the action.

What happens to your action if the next turn becomes one day long?

If the day becomes one day long the best I'd suggest is having the scouts that would have participated in the steel delivery instead do one of two things: either a) join the other scout team in assisting Xenon and Shiir, just for safety's sake. Or, if we're feeling daring, b) having the scout team do a sweep of the Sharen suggested route to look for 'trouble' spots like ambush points or any suspicious characters or activity along that route. If we gain a beforehand familiarity with the route that should make spotting trouble on the actual delivery much easier, but there is the risk that the scout team will run into trouble in checking the route first or alert whoever is out there that we may be intending to use that route (though being stealthy scouts we should, logically, avoid being noticed by anyone).

Exactly the same thing.

The delivery to the Sharen is as important as the Toll Collecters for our development, the steel delivery also has the benefit that it is something that can be accomplished in one turn. We may defeat or capture these toll collecters in one turn, but the repercussions will tie us down for much longer and potentially prevent us from delivering the steel next turn. I'd rather not take that risk.

While checking the route is something I would have wanted to do if i'd had the opportunity last turn, It's unfortunately not practical at the moment for the reasons given above.

That's fine, just wasn't sure if Madea was going ahead with the steel delivery next day if things slowed to one turn. Of course if that is the case we'd be heading out to ensure it has scout support.

Your assignments require more scouts than you have. 16 assistants, 17 assigned tasks, the 5 with you plus the 12 given tasks.

*Chuckles softly* Given I am that new recruit, I resent such a statement! *makes playful clawing motions and wiggles brows* Ha, given that I'm a former Warrior, I should be just fine. *pounds chest in a primal, comical fashion to show dominance*

As for the state of our "unknown encounter"'s equipment, I believe that in the update Xenon inquired as to any equipment that stood out, and the merchant responded with "They had decent armor, not of Val quality mind you." - which means it's not `poor` quality either.

*chuckles softly and prods Dsieda's nose* XP As if we need more mouths to feed.

Well, armor comes in all qualities. By the looks of it, it seemed to be more light armor than our heavy. So perhaps medium quality light armor?

First, a comment about the update. Steel Delivery was a success. It went off without a hitch. We will wait until Friday for the results of our other actions. Some of you may have noticed I do not have sunglasses. Alas! ;p

Also, of course we throw our new recruits to the wolves. It gives the rest of us time to escape! Haven’t you ever read Kir’s rules of scouting? :p

--------------------------------------------------------------------

On to the matter for which you have all been waiting. The SiC position. First, allow me to say that as I expected from talking to most of you before and from your own comments in the pms, that all of you showed the individuality and ability to act as both an SiC and potentially a ranked member in future, you also come with a host of interesting ideas, it has certainly been a tough decision.

Originally, I stated that I would post up the PMs people sent to me, however, the posts are long and many of the same points and ideas were raised. Instead, I will pick out the various ideas people had on equipment and training and how I view them.

I hope from this that all of you should be able to see where I am coming from and give you a better idea of the direction I want to take the scouts. If you want to see the results, just skip to the bottom. ;p

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ideas I Intend to Use
Sharpshooter Crossbows: These were suggested in various forms and have been on the scout kit list for some time, they are planned as an eventual development, but for the moment we are not even kitted out on our automatic crossbows and will await developments from the Techs going to Orthorbbae.

Short Swords: I know how attached some scouts are too their ‘sharpies’, so let me be clear, this probably isn’t for some time. Close combat fighting should not be our focus and we currently have daggers. There is also the potential for double daggers instead.

Grappling Hooks: Grappling hooks are an idea that I plan to investigate, but only after I have seen how well we perform at parkour, of course no matter how good we are, some building will always be too tall to run up, but it is not something we have yet come across. Only a few should be needed, one or two per squad.

Looking Glass: Coincidently an idea which had been crossing my mind shortly before it appeared in one of the PMs. It was suggested quite a while ago before we were able to work glass or crystals. Since then it has become a more feasible idea, but would likely only be made for use in the watchtower or observation roles. (And pirating! Yarr!)

Training Many ideas were put forward, obstacle courses, verses training with the warriors, ‘Extreme Scout Training’, urban mobility, mental fitness etc. I will make a list of these at another point and add them to my future plans post on Page 1. Additionally I had already mentioned in my first page the potential for learning Mana bolts, Mana charging and light or shadow mana manipulation. I will add to that the possibility of training in mana assisted jumping. The only utility based training suggested was Reading, which is a skill we have always assumed we can use, but like swimming, may be one we are not all familiar with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ideas with Potential
Facial Protection (Goggles/masks/mufflers): There is the potential that in our exploration we could become exposed to noxious fumes, like in the mine shaft, in those instances, equipment like this could be useful. For general purpose, it is less important and may make us more recognisable – to my knowledge the only group that usually wears masks in Chel are the Vloz’ress, not someone we want to be mistaken for. Of course, this depends on how it is designed and implemented. Sunglasses for goggles anyone? ;p

Better Armour Another common suggestion, fortunately we have not yet had to put our armours durability to the test, but people want to investigate the potential for chainmail or a scout armour Mk2. The blacksmiths are busy with Mk 2 armour for the warriors, perhaps we can convince the crafters to consider Mk2 armour, they are thinking of starting to sell chitin armour though, so we may have a tricky time convincing them.

Hidden Weapons: This is very much a borderline section. Boot knives were suggested and ideas such as this may have some potential in future for escaping capture situations.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ideas I will not be considering
Ninja/Assassin Type Weapons Many of the ideas are cool, but impractical given the macro nature of the game. Throwing knives, Shuriken etc are almost redundant due to our automatic crossbow. Garrottes are impractical due to the habit in Chel of covering ones neck, often in armour and the need to sneak up very close behind a target to use one.

Multiple Weapon Specialities It is impractical to train in multiple weapons within the macro game for what is likely only a marginal benefit. I will be sticking to one type of Melee weapon, one type of Ranged weapon and perhaps one hidden blade if such becomes feasible.

Climbing Claws From my understanding of the use of mana to smooth building surfaces, climbing claws would in most cases be more hassle than they are worth, if they would work at all, especially if we have grappling hooks available. Again, this will to an extent hinge on.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so the business out of the way. We come to my decision. I have chosen Thindra to be my SiC.

This comes with a caveat. Thindra is currently having difficulty with regular access, but is hoping to resolve this shortly. If it proves to be a persistent or irresolvable issue over a reasonable time frame I will reopen the SiC position.

I would like the SL posts will to be filled by the following four people:

Kir’ima, Kazdrin, Dseida and Cressin.

If any of you do not wish these roles, let me know and I will make it so. If you wish to be assigned to a certain squad, please post and I will try to accommodate your desires.

Now then, let me be frank. I am not going to place duties upon anyone, first and foremost PtP is a game, so I want you to have fun and not feel obliged to act a certain way, I would prefer that you make efforts voluntarily and in line with what you can manage. I said earlier that I know that all of you are capable of filling the roles, I stand by that comment.

It will be a given that the duties of squads will be rotated (though SLs can volunteer their squads for dangerous duties if a choice is available) and these positions are not set in stone, they will be changeable. People will not be restricted from moving between squads and I will make every effort not to pair the same characters turn and turn again – unless they wish it.

So... any questions?

*raises hand from the warriors section*

Yes, I have one... it's not on the same topic, but something I thought I'd bring up regarding the Sharen's latest requests... specifically the request for chitin/hides. What's the current Kirisu population like? Is it in any danger of becoming scarce? I ask because it's still one of our main sources of material for armour, so if we wanted to fulfill that request we'd have to be careful as to how many we kill and how often... And since unarmed gatherers aren't the best at finding said info, I was wondering if the scouts would do so?
