For traders they have big axes and clubs. ;) At least they could be very poor traders. But poor traders don't survive very long. That's why the Illhardo, Nal'Sarkoth and Highland raiders travel in large armed groups. And beside of that Clans there isn't much trade between the cities.
Maybe they stumbled over some of our runaways in Chel and now they are check out what's up with this people from another city.

If you look at the symbol they are all wearing, I'd also guess that they were at least a little bit organized, to give credence to that point. I know this theory about these newcomers is unlikely, but with the Nal'sarkoth nearby, who's to say that another lesser-known and smaller clan can't be close either?

If the lighter skin on some of them isn't just artistic licence, it could be an old Dooter subhouse.

Not the Nal'sarkoth, though with them being so close we should run into them sooner or later.

I doubt they are slavers or mercs looking for the slaves, as they have made little attempt to hide their approach. And we could easily flee the ruins, just like the group of slaves we kicked out did. Unless there is a second group flanking us. :A

They could be whats left of fallen minor clan, or a group of mercenaries, looking for a place to live.

Given the state of their equipment, they are at least competent fighters. And may be good enough that throwing rocks at them would be ineffective.

Since the ranked members start out each time slice, they get first shot at dealing with them. Though sending Shiir is almost as bad as An'jhali. He could not survive against those odds by himself, and taking the warriors with him would reveal our lack of armor and weapons.

I offered to go in the shout-box. I figure, I die and Tohya can take over my rank as we are so new and I haven't really done much yet and she could continue the work easily.

I agree that Shiir is not a good choice to send. This situation demands a representative, not a general. And no offense, but even our warmaster's "almighty" abs aren't gonna spare him from a dozen heavily armed and armored mercenaries.

Perhaps our warmaster should sit this one out and let someone in the clan who is a good negotiator do the talking instead. And alongside the negotiator we should send a small contingent of our own to protect him/her from harm. Any volunteers? *ooo*

We'll need Shiir when things go sour, but we need him ALIVE for that moment.

No matter what they are it seems to me that they aren't after the slaves. They made to much of an entrance. The symbol that is not only worn but worn out in the open says its likely a unit of some kind seeing as its simple enough I doubt its a clan symbol but I could be wrong. I say we try to make friends with them. If they're a small trader group that goes between some minor clans we have a way to trade, if their part of a clan we can get some allies to help us out, so forth. Sending an armed but unarmored person would say 'Hey look we think your dangerous and we're not ready for you!' Send a small diplomatic group armed with knives/short swords. This shows they're meant to be more of a 'Just in case' idea than a 'OMG They might attack us' idea.

I will go in any capacity, guard or Herald.

*she pats Ves'xile's shoulder*

Don't worry, I'm NOT planning on dying, but it has to be considered a possibility that I may do so or be wounded/captured and sold off into slavery. I'll do my best to be safe if they want me to go.

*lol*

I agree that an equal show of force is needed in the escorts.

Considering our current lack of weapons and armor, an 'equal show of force' would require three or four times as many clan members accompany Shiir (who we can safely assume from the last update will lead the negotiators) as there are in this group.

That would be over 50 of us. ^^; ...which would undermine any attempt to demonstrate our own live-and-let-live intentions.

Ves'xilé looks at Ar'lein *smallsmile* As long as I may accompany thee, I will not object.

Well, out of all our ranked members, I would probably recommend An'jhali as she has had formal training in diplomacy outside of the "Here's my fist, there's your face. If you don't want the two to meet, you'll listen to my demands" approach warriors seem to be so fond of. I'm not suggesting to send her out to personally greet them, but invite 1-3 of our guests to hold an audience with her. Lower is better, but it depends on what they're comfortable with. Besides, if any discussions are going to take place, the comfort of even a fort in disrepair is still preferable to the bare outdoors, in my opinion. This allows 'real' talks to take place since the leaders on both sides are face to face, but still gives us the security of keeping our Ill'haress safe, provided our guards are adequate enough to fending off 1-3 mercenaries. I trust her judgment in deciding what questions and answers to give our guests.

Piggybacking on that suggestion, I would recommend sending 1 person. It's much easier to convince another to come as a single person when you come as a single person. Trust is usually reciprocal. Send 1 herald and 2 guards and it'll be hard for them NOT to expect to also send 3 to meet our Ill'Haress. 1 or 3, if the feces hits the fan, all will be killed or captured, so why send more than necessary?

As for the show of force... I don't know if I'd bother with that. Anyone we send will be gravely outmatched one way or another so I would think sending someone unarmed would be a clearer sign that we're not aggressive... ... ... unless we want to be as, chances are, they'll see our warriors lining along the ridge in an ambush formation.

Losing the hatted-one would be a crime against the Tei'kaliath!

If Ar'lein dies, or anyone else for that matter, then Lor'tohm will strangle them to death with his measuring tape! It will be a fitting-session the likes of which those mercs will NEVER forget. }:3

Whatever we do, or whomever chooses to go, maybe there should be at least one female in the greeting group. Looks like the visitors have a female leading them, so greetings and whatever talk might go easier if there was one female to accompany Shiir/the herald.

Our War Master isn't that reckless (Thank the Lady). If it turns out they are not hostile, then An'jhali can come out and do the talking for us. We don't want to risk her at this point when we would have real difficulty defending her (do to lack of forces and equipment) if things go sour.

You have a point, Kail'odian, but our best female fighter is not available at the moment and a bit of a hothead (Ys'sa is a berserker after all). Appearances aside, I think bending to convention like that undermines the authority of our Warmaster. Even though he is merely a male :P we should show our confidence in him by letting him 'do his job as he sees fit'. We chose him. We owe it to him to show our confidence in him.
