We need to treat this as a possible Guerilla warfare situation. I mean, if we are going to fight them (Which we really don't want) we need to fight them on OUR terms. We know the terrane. Even better, we have an architect who is getting to know the building. Maybe we can use the ruins as a real weapon... if it comes to that.

I think that first we need to know who they are. ... Don't suppose one of the slaves would recognize the people if they're dragged out of bed suddenly?

Hopefully, they're just curious, and not looking for slaves.

We should treat this diplomatically, this could be our first contact with one of the clans from Chel'el'Sussoloth. And greeting them with a poorly armed mob isn't going to impress them much. Also you want to consider what armored troops would be in this area? If they are well armored, which we can't tell yet, it could be a patrol from a major clan. So until they prove themselves hostile, we don't want to appear as a threat to them. Slavers wouldn't necessarily be in armor as they are looking for soft targets.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we mob them. And no one wants to actually have a battle, it seems. However, having back-up plans is a good idea.

I think most of us should stay out of sight. There's no need to let them know our full number. Let them imagine more.

maybe we should apoint a herald or diplomat to greet them and if it turns out to be nasty we should relay on gorilla tactics,
keep the clans members hidden until we really need to attack.

We should let them see enough of us to know that they won't get out of this cavern alive if they dare attack us.
We don't know if they are hostile or not, but if they are even just opportunistic we may never see that negotiator alive again.

That's why I agree with Kuma, the herald seems a good idea. First, it gives us a chance to inspect the situation without putting Anjahli in a potentially dagerous situation and seccond it makes us seem more like a real and structured clan.
An Ilharess should be distant, perhaps even seeming a little aloof. Immagine if our scouts stumble on a clan's territory I doubt they'll get greeted by Quantana or Ashwaren herself, that wouldn't happen because they have people to do that. An Ilharess doesn't go to the intruders, no the intruders are taken to the Ilharess. And only if they are of interest because our Ilharess her time is way to precious to be disturbed by some mere footsoldiers. Or atleast thats the message we should be sending.

I hope we don't end like the last group who occupied the ruins. Maybe that's another exilled Clan and want to take the ruins from us. :D
We should think about the mistake the ex-slaves did as they tried to defend the ruins and make it better.
That means:
1. Don't insult that guys and give them names like warpussy.
2. Challenge their best warrior
3. Don't splitt up
;)

Still, talking with them seems to be the best idea. Although I would hide the clanmembers in favourable positions so that they could strike fast if necessary.
And we should check the area around. Maybe they already know that we are here and send out some sneaking scouts. ;)

Diplomacy could be very tricky if they are actually hostile, we'd be certain to lose the diplomat(s) if it comes to that. However, if they are not directly hostile I think they should be able to understand if we send out a diplomat with an armed escort (neither of us know about the other's intentions after all). I think this should be fairly common even, it's the same way many of the clans would greet us if we were to visit them in this manner.

Being a herald is a very risky job, you need to have a silver tongue to not get yourself in trouble :P . (oh and those who not know what a herald is. Its a messenger to greet new people and proclaim messages from the leaders to their own people)
The approaching men would probably not kill the herald. "Well well, it`s a messenger, he`s not important. If we send a diplomat he/she will need to have a small armed escort ."
If any of them gets killed its open war... not good for our clan :U

Btw, whoops, misspelled "gerilla" to "gorilla". I of course mean "Gerilla tactics" not "gorilla tactics" :V

I was just rereading Moonless Age chap. 5 and noticed that Ariel's lands are to the north of the city proper. These folks could very well be a Sarghress patrol.
Thalar,
I looked for ages and can't find that map of Chel's main cavern you posted before. Where is it, again? ^^;

Kuma, it's spelled 'guerilla'. :)

Hmm if they are Sarghress...
That would explain why they have armor and if so they are probably just recon scouts.

I was thinking more like the patrol that gets wiped out by demons in Moonless Age chap. 10 or the one that appears in Relic Hunters.
This bunch doesn't have any wolves with them though, so they may not be Sarghress.

If they attack the herald, it will remove any doubt about what we need to do if they enter the ruins. Any guards sent with the herald could be easily killed, if it came to that. And we have too few armed fighters as it is.

The mounts seem to be more associated with troops from the main clan, this could be a patrol from a sub clan. And at this point there is really no telling what clan they are from.

We also could wait until they enter the ruins and perpare a trap. We send on our herald together with a few guards to the introuders and if something goes wrong we attack from outside our hideouts, appear on the top of some buildings, throw large stones at them and so on. ;) I
