I might have missed it in the reading, but it looks like everyone has missed the point. First of all, the word/title of Faern is merely someone in a specific profession, and it's not a unique one. The job title would need to be more something like Advisor or Sensechal, but the problem is, is that no one has really answered the question.

This is not an in-game question but a game mechanics one. What would that player actually DO? There is nothing that is really enforcible from a game mechanic point of view; no resources to train, no articles to upload. This individual would be an advisor to the Ilharess, and there's very little that can be done in game.

One alternative would be to offer extra votes in the Events archive to the seneschal; ranked members currently get two votes and one countervote, doubling that might be a viable incentive.

However, the role of seneschal is an extremely powerful one, in-game, and one I, personally, wouldn't like to see in just an up-for-grabs first-come sort of thing. Anyone with a paypal account and the funds to do it could, technically, subscribe and become the advisor, which basically bones the rest of us if we don't like them.

Simply put, in game having an advisor to the Ilharess makes sense, but game mechanic wise it places responsibility in a position that can be bought. If there is a solution to that, I might go for it, but otherwise I can't see it being a viable option.

Does an educated populace ever come into play?
Even if not, the Faern could hone/test magical potential in clan members and the Ilharess.
By theory, this means a Faern could, by theory, 'upgrade' the resources that are clan members, correct?

The position of Sensechal as you described (an advisor who gets extra votes and a cancel vote in the event archive) actually WOULD be a good position... However, it's one I think we'd have to put some sort of restriction up to uptain.

For example, have those willing and able to pay for it apply, and then have them be voted on by the members (and/or ranked members.) The winner would have to be one who's already proved themselves to the players in some way, theoretically.

It would be more complex, but for such a powerful position as Senshechal...

Hmmm I like the idea of the Faern looking for magical potential in the people, that would help us alot in the long run. A good mage could help with defense, or offenses, or maybe even gathering materials. the problem comes with the now; what do we need now? sints where getting one now, he'll have to make some leaps for the clan.

Restriction for Senechal? Hmm. How about being unable to create event archive vote options? That way he'd -have- to be fairly nice to the other ranked, since he wouldn't be able to start anything alone...

I'm not sure that's a good plan, actually...
And for some reason, I read the extra votes wrong...

What if they get extra votes for the LEADER archive? After all, it's the LEADER they're advising, right?

You realize that would mean no one would be able to suggest/vote in the leader archive then? O_o; I'd rather not, thanks. XP

**shakes head** The only way to do that would be to take our vote power away....

Unless you mean in the comic, they talk to the Senechal who tells the Ilharess which is most popular? I'm not sure how well that'd work....

I still think if it is a Senechal, they should get extra vote power in the Leader archive, and normal in the event. So they'd have 1-2 extra votes and one vote against leader... of course, that could mean extra programming, so might not work so well.

Of course, it's important to figure out what it is people want- a teacher/Faern, or advisor/Senechal.

Seeing how this option is/was winning and from the responses, its just not something that should happen. I'd say instead we need an option that just says "A day goes by with none of the refugees bothering the Ill'haress".

Cause it really seems we don't know what we want and I personally don't think there is anything we can do until the scouts get back and Kat is done testing the algae (aka, I don't think there is anything to update in Leader archive till the Event archive has updated and new ideas come in).

Faern as a teacher, I think we can worry about teachers after were a tad bit bigger and have a more permanent like home. Not much point of calling it a Faern though if its supposed to teach, just call it a teacher or professor.

Faern as a more powerful advisor, attained from paying for a rank and having more power over the Ill'haress, I don't like that idea personally.

Though I do think that it would be a bit more efficient once were a bigger/established people that we would eventually have to go through ranked members for the Ill'haress to hear our ideas. I just don't think this early on is when it should start. But I don't think it would be a single entity that we would be going through, more like going through Master Scout, Warmaster, Supplies, etc. Who would end up being the Ill'haress's eyes, hands and ears, rather than the basic member of society.

I hope that made some sense to someone ^^;

Squirell, the point of PtP is that everyone can have a say what to do next. You can't just void all the voting and say 'let's just say the option is we give her a day of peace instead.'
Even if Faern gets vetoed, it'll be in favor of whatever's next on the list.

I think Faern as a teacher/magic user is a good idea.

I think Senechal as an advisor to the Ilharess would need some extra thing, rather then be offered just as an 'up to grabs' position.

I know when -I- submitted it, I was thinking 'teacher/magic user,' as it seemed there wasn't really a good way to get an 'adviser' position to work. (It was being discussed briefly at the time.)

However, that's just MY opinion on the matter, other people may think differently.

well a Faern can also organize.

It's one of the best traits in someone who has been trained in knowledge.

Have them start setting up the base groups and from THOSE groups a leader from each will be chosen. In the end, people who CAN pay and want each position can be voted on for each group of focus.

THAT would be a HUGE help in the beginning. Setting up Topic groups where ways of doing things can be hammered out and watched over. From those groups can come ideas that the artists and writers can incorporate into the stories.

As for a Faern being overly magical... WHY?

I mean, sorcery is out there as a profession. A scholar is what a Faern truly is. A professor, Archologist, Research scientist, scientist, etc. Being WAY too overachieving will not be good for them or the story.

I mean do you want a person who solves EVERYTHING?? (Xena warrior Faern?)

No, I believe we need organization before anything else. Specialization will come.

At this point a faern who has:

Organizational skills...

We SERIOUSLY need a census ASAP to figure out what we are working with people, skill and equipment wise to best assess our immediate, short, medium and long term needs. this information will be given to each group and the the leader to make her choices with.

survival skills..

possibly some time spent in the exploratory forces and has seen MUCH of the under dark and surface would be good in knowing the basic needs of a group to not die. They would also have a little understanding of basic weaponry.

Basic understanding of Geology..

WE live in caves.. hope we know SOMETHING about the rock.. if not a rudimentary course can be quickly cobbled together. and if that person didn't HAVE those skills. be able to quickly locate someone who did and have them start teaching.

The Faern doesn't NEED this skill. people who have this knowledge can be found.

People skills..

Face it, people are prone to infighting and panic. the leader will be our LEADER.. but someone who can deal with people one on one is needed to help create the individual groups and give them a focus. Until more ranked people are made the Faern would be a calming force (hopefully) to come to.

They would NOT speak for the leader, but instead hear and take the people's ideas to her. She ( the leader) would make the choices with all the ranked people present to discuss and then pass her choice down. Then the ranked and faern would handle any questions regarding the choice.

Now having said all this, the faern could be a temporary post, I am thinking until there are enough ranked members for each area of focus. Then that person might try and fall into a specialist role.

Meska- most Faern DO MAGIC.
In fact, pretty much all of them do.

The best for the clan, yes, would be one with knowledge in ALL subjects, including High Arts (even if they don't have any particular affinity) because they are the ones that will be teaching it all.

Their greatest duty is to teach, not organize. (Though organization might be the skill of one Faern, another's workspace may be chaotic.)

What you are describing sounds like an Advisor, a Senechal, which seems to be what several people were thinking when they chose the option.

yeah, I still say a Faern who could cast magics, and educate people in certain things would help, he'd do stuff like "find people with magical potential" "study nearby strata for valuable minerals" he would recruit people with magical talents to be a resource to the clan.

Hetros,

YES! yes yes yes... I might argue the magic part *grins at ADK*, but you have said it WAY easier then I have....

I would think they would have gotten a Census together with all pertainant informations on Population numbers, able bodied for work, magics, skills, level of mastery, and so on.

this information would be invaluable if it has not already been done. Would seriously help with getting crap done.

this person would be our knowledge base and go to person for that stuff.

(If I am repeating I'm sorry...)
