UNNATURAL BEASTIES!

Postby Hetros on Wed Nov 16, 2011 8:38 pm

This Thread shall be a catalogue of all the nasty beasties that we have encountered and what we need to do about them.

Flying Horrors (big and small): Probably untamable, if at all domesticated, probably only to the degree falcons are, which requires raising the falcon or hawk from the egg. Very dangerous and aggressive, they might eventually get it into their heads that we're a food source unless we deal with the big one and see about falconry-taming a few (if at all possible)

Kurr (Only one horrible variety so far): We have no clue. But it is definitely a carnivor, and it looks to be the size of a goddamn GRIZZLY. That is 10-12 feet tall god damn it! It could be as dangerous as a real bear, which is to say, not at all provided we don't leave food out and we don't intrude on it's territory, but it could also be an aggressive predator ready to bust into houses and eat babies. Appears to be immune to mana bolts, or at least has a high resistance, further it's song is capable of incapacitating prey. Once it is roused into hunting it won't stop till it kills, displaying an enormous amount of stamina.

Mana Rats (Only One Variety): Seem to be attracted to mana plants, might be related to mana plant growth, but might only be attracted to the biggest, fastest growing mana plants. Mana Rats are a severe pest who incapacitate Drow by biting a chunk out of their aura. Potential danger if in large numbers or if they begin to see Drow as a food source.

Considering this bear has clearly caught and killed a tri-deer, I'd say it's a definite threat. It may or may not think drow are worth eating, but do we want to risk finding out if it's willing to expand it's menu?

See if the Nals know what the thing is. Maybe they can tell us if we need to get the warriors out there.

For the last time, you do not have to raise a falcon or hawk from an egg D< *THROW HAMMER*.

... Also, Thalar says we don't need to tame the birds for eggs. But we do need to find out how often they lay 83. We prolly still need to experiment over the falconry hurrah.

And about the bug bear... We'll have walls around the settlement soon, and we will be travelling in groups outside of them. Not every bigger-than-you predator is going to take you down and eat you at first sight... So we don't need to kill this one or exterminate every member of its species.

Indeed, leaving dangerous wildlife like this alive actually enhances our defenses, keep its lair 'marked' and funnel hostiles into its territory and let it do the work for us ("Hey, it's not our fault you invading army got eaten by a monstrosity, you should be more careful!" :P )

Oh I agree on those fronts, and you DON'T?! O_o I thought Falcons and hawks had to be raised from the egg? Or as close to that as possible to be trained properly?

As for the bug bears, just stating for the record that they ARE dangerous =P when in groups and with walls, yeah, less so... but STILL. Wiping them out is a bad idea from an ecological stand point since we don't want to start screwing with the food chain TOO badly >> but yeah.

[10:15:26 AM] Thalar: and what you've found.. is not a bugbear
[10:15:27 AM] Jane: Ah yes, question about it, was it meant to be a D&D Bugbear and reza made his own visual take on it or just a new thingie?
[10:15:38 AM] Thalar: no, i asked for a bear-creature with a mantis head
[10:15:46 AM] Minalia: ooh

Mana rats. Pests for the most part but capable of incapacitating a full grown drow if provoked. They're apparently good for mana plants though, so they're being contained but otherwise left alone.
We shall settle this in the ancient way. WITH A CHILDREN'S CARD GAME!

Thinking maybe we should update this thread more, since the Kurr seem to have just revealed that it can use some sort of singing to knock people out, and mana attacks didn't seem to do anything to it.
