Plains of Blood III- Game Thread

Postby The Watcher » Thu Apr 14, 2011 7:22 pm

The Plains of Blood. An alternate world that has existed for time beyond memory, existed from the first moment bloodshed between the first primitive sentients, in the very dawning of the multiverse. It exists outside of time and space, a plane seemingly infinite yet comprised of innumerable mysterious pocket worlds linked by portals and land bridges, infinitely interconnected yet hanging impossibly in an endless void. From the days of the very first armies, this place has resonated with the call of battle and spilt blood, drawing mighty warriors and champions from infinite realms into its deadly embrace, to slaughter or subjugate all they encounter once they are there. Rifts steal whole armies and nations, pitting them against each other on jigsaw worlds at the whim of some incomprehensible force of carnage. Once more, the Plains stir, hungering for blood. Once more, unknowable rifts and portals have opened, and the newest panoply of factions find their way here, some more knowingly, some more willingly, than others.

The Plains call, and the Plains thirst. And so, you have answered them.

Fates have mercy on your soul.

(i guess I'll go first, tell me how bad I noob it up.)

Steam Scale

The Steam tanks (in anti-personal load-out) get loaded onto the shooting stars. Then the shooting stars along with all the other units, save a few scouts, fly towards to the southwestern edge of the forest.

Five man teams of scouts are sent (based on starting location) north, Northwest, and south.

(Not sure how much land we cover in a turn but just take foot speed on even terrain and double it.)

((Mechanically fine, there's no real limits on unit movement beyond "use your reason and sense" but the convention is to write your posts out in story format, just like you would if you were roleplaying a single person, but with the actions of your armies and individual characters instead. Telling the story is half the fun, and certainly makes things more entertaining to read.))

((Agree with The Watcher))

High overhead, the Celhides of the Sixth Field Army of the Eighth Alliance flew, the noise of their jets mostly inaudible due to their flight at 2000 feet over the surface. They were organized into five flights of four prowlers, spaced out at 1 mile intervals.

"All pilots, listen up," said the flight leader, Euler 1. "Our mission is simple. Provide aerial reconnaissance of the region and provide something resembling a map for General Menesthecles. Euler Flight will move along vector 045. Gauss Flight will move along vector 000. Riemann Flight will follow vector 090. Euclid Flight will follow vector 22.5. Fermat flight will follow vector 67.5. Use your gun cams to record the terrain and any activity and make sure your APS is active and recording. Go." The five flights peeled apart as the Sixth Field Army marched along behind and below. It was organized in a giant tactical column with the Hoplites organized 10 soldiers wide and 80 soldiers deep. The cavalry units arrayed themselves alongside while the Patakos, Gastraphes, and support unites remained in the rear. Dromes were either scattered throughout or sent ahead for more detailed scouting of the terrain and any enemy activity. Near the front of the army, General Menesthecles, Knotolis of Spathe, and Koraki of Nkremosi conferred, going over the army's preparedness for combat and discussing various response strategies to ambush quietly.

---

Gauss 2 pinged back a photograph to the General, who sent it to the rest of the army for them to see. It showed the main body of the Steam Scale army in midflight, apparently trying to keep a low profile instead of soaring through at maximum altitude. Gauss 1, meanwhile, had spotted the southbound scouts and sent the order back to his flight. Together, they VERY GENTLY pulled up towards the unknowns, flying into formation parallel to and at a fairly shallow climb towards the flight vector of the Steam Scale scouts. Meanwhile, the flight leader relayed that General Menesthecles had ordered them to only fire in self defense.
"Keep those fingers off the trigger, boys," he said. "We don't wanna cause an international incident."
"With all due respect, sir," remarked Gauss 4, "We're not even in the known world anymore. We CAN'T cause an international incident."
"You knew what I meant, Puke Roll," Gauss 1 replied.

A deathly stillness settled upon the southeastern corner of the strange landmass. Where before the ground merely was flaking away to be lost in the void, now a strange haze set over the area, casting the land in unnatural shadows and the air in a foggy half-light. Turrets and featureless towers jutted forth from the surface, ominous spires of darkness lurking in the soupy glow. Even viewed from afar, the anomaly sat heavy, an unnatural blight on the alien landscape-- a great dark foggy mass through which only the most peripheral spires could be seen.

Its borders, fluid, seeped across the land like a lava flow, sluggish yet seemingly without cease or hope for reprieve. In the deepest, darkest depths of the haze, something opened its eyes and let out a sob.

The enviroment had changed.

The Source paused in its actions to assess the situation. Where it had been plowing through a forest it was now in a wasteland of sorts, with shrub-brush and a small army of other Guardians scattered around it. It immediately reached out with its senses, and experienced what other beings might call shock. Aside from the units nearby, no friendly signals were present. Worse, its senses detected no familiar landmarks and noted the presence of sentient life at the far reaches of its range.

For a short time, the rotation of its innermost ring, the Source conferred with the Old One, the only other truly self-aware Guardian that was present. Several theories were passed back and forth, but in the end the conclusion was that the enviroment had not changed, but their location had changed. They were alone, without support, and with limited numbers in an unfamiliar world.

The Old One advised caution. On their old world, the Guardians of Fire and Stone reigned supreme, with armies that numbered in the millions, worshipped as gods or pointlessly attacked by lesser races. This was not the case here. With their limited numbers and without any of their truly powerful Guardians present, the other creatures might pose a significant threat.

The Source determined a course of action:
1. Pairs of Lava Beasts would be sent out to investigate the various groupings of life present. If necessary the life-forms would be wiped out. If not, they would be ignored.
2. The Source would spend this time scouring the ground, mining the material needed to produce more units. They needed numbers more than anything at present.

This was immediately put into action. The Source began moving outward from its arrival point in a tight spiral, smoke rising as it began to mine stone and rock. Sentinels dotted the sky above it, while most of the other Guardians placed themselves in a rough unorganized ring around it for protection.

Pairs of Lava Beasts bounded away, headed to investigate the other signs of life. (They make no effort to be subtle, that is not the Guardians' way. There are two Lava Beasts headed toward each army, save for DPG's, which is behind the Steam Scale and mountains.)

The Old One stepped smoothly off the Source, the glow of magma under his skin brightening and the air around him rippling with heat as he floated gently down to his favored mount, a Dragon. His Fire-Born simply jumped, trusting to their magical joints to absorb the impact. They took up a guard position around him, some jumping up to cling to random parts of the Dragon's rough skin.

Riemann Flight boggled. Or at least, as much as they could while flying. \

"Snipes and Cripes, head over for that Ghibli Castle," said Riemann 1. "Bonzo, with me. Don't engage the enemy and don't be a threat." A series of affirmative noises later, and Riemann 3 and Riemann 4 were flying off and over the Dark and Dreaming, sending back a live video feed to General Menesthecles of the Ghibli Castle/Hurricane of Fog. Riemann 1 and 2 flew over The Guardians, making disarmingly lazy spirals while filming the proceedings.

"Force Leader, be advised, possible enemy troops inbound toward the lizards will pass by your position shortly."
"Understood. Threat assessment."
"Unknown, enemy units appear to be made out of molten lava. Recommend long range attack."
"Acknowledged, continue your mission." A word of command later, and four Gastraphes were running at full speed for the head of the column, prepared to provide long range fire should it be necessary.

Meanwhile, Euler Flight was seriously creeped the **** out by The One.
"Gods, Flight, it's... it's... it's horrible!"
"Can it, pilot. Hold formation, make sure you're recorder is on. We don't need to fight them, just watch them."

"*insert profanity here*!" shouted Euler 1. "Incoming Hostiles, 12 o'clock high! Pull up, fire on the first one, and kick afterburner for home!!" As one (collective points = 300), Euler flight pulled up hard, turning towards the incoming the guardians. All the planes locked heat seeking missiles on the leading guardian, before firing and pulling away. Due to the missile's heat seeking nature, after getting a good lock on a target, they don't need to be guided in by maintaining line of sight. Having launched their volley, Euler flight kicked afterburner and flew at maximum velocity toward their army. "Force Leader, this is Euler 1. We have been engaged and are retreating, requesting anti-air assistance ASAP!!"

"Acknowledged. Gastraphes, move to the head of the column and prepare to intercept enemy fighters."

The twilight is not a storm, not a hurricane, but merely a tremendous.. mass sitting atop the surface of the plains. Riemann Flight finds it strangely still and quiet-- perhaps a local weather phenomenon? That doesn't quite explain the inexplicable feeling of dread welling up at the back of the pilots' minds-- nothing they can't deal with, but unsettling.

Deep below, faintly visible through the uppermost layers of fog, something that looks almost like a chain stretches upward from the interminable, indeterminate mass below.

Most of the Lava Beasts continued their approach on all factions. The ones approaching the One paused however, slowing as they detected the battle above. They came to a dead stop, observing the ensuing chaos.

Edit: ((I'm already not paying attention...))

The Source and other units observed the strange vehicles overhead (Riemann flights). They did not seem to be a threat at this time. The Old One, displaying one of the idiosyncrasies still present in him from his many years as a mere human, reminded the Source of that which it already knew: That many sentient beings were curious about the Guardians when they first encountered them and simply observing them did not consistute a threat. The Source responded with that which the Old One already knew: If they did demonstrate a possible threat, they would be met with all necessary force.

Edited multiple times because I apparently can't spell Riemann and I wanted it right. ;)

((Took long enough for me, sorry for delay. I just recap what the Alliance has done up to this point and well... Then post my post.
Oh, and hey, You guys mind if I mention now and then what time of the day it is, as my army is BASED on the fact that my heroes switch with passing of the days?))

The forces were in disarray. Up at rising in the dawn, the illusionists had dropped the web around them, only to reveal that the rocky cliffs around them were there no more. There was more light, more air, and the sky itself looked weird and scary in colors. Even the Sun wasn't up in the same place! With no real idea what was happening, forces quickly gathered their equipment, prepared to move, and nodded to their Ruler.
"Onward, quickly, for the cover! Out of the open! Frontal march, quick step to the west! Raiders, take flanks! Every corsair to the front! Snipers, guarding formation on corsairs! Move move move!"
With that said, Ruler and Daughter leaded their suddenly formed column up to the woods, where standard defense settings were put up: Wardens trapped the surroundings, snipers took their locations, web was raised again, and four scout teams of three, with one sniper following behind each of these units, were send to follow the borders of the woods and into the woods. Also, three units of three scouts were send out to the open, to track up even wider surroundings.

-----

Scout unit A-3, one of those send to track the forest edge toward the south, came to sudden halt. They had spotted something to move on the open. With little effort and their equipment, they formed out the enemy: something between a human and a lizard, carrying light equipment and clearly making out the surroundings. Scouts, five of them it seemed. But the Lord of the enemy hadn't ever used something so abominal as this! These creatures were unknown, but clearly soldiers.
And Alliance knew only one good way to deal with unknown soldiers sneaking around.

Raising his hand, the leader of the scouts formed out complex hand signals and few clicky noises.
Few seconds later, same kind of noises answered behind them, and the Warden sniper lifted her rifle up. She zoomed up to the enemy, and made a ruling: they were humanoid, so it seemed their head would be as important as usual.
She placed the croshair on the first target, took aim between the eyes, and pulled the trigger. The, in quick succession, she shot out few more shots, aiming each with lethal efficiency to each target.

((...75 points versus 5 points... I think Steam scale scouts are wiped off bit fast there...))

(RP mode on)

The steam scale touched down on the southern edge of the forest at the foot of a mountain. Drakelius had just settled down for tea with Reginald and Hermoine two scouts aproached them.

"Lord Regent, High Commander, Master Engineer, We've come to report."

"Well where the bloody hell is the third?" said Reginald, putting down his cup.

"The northbound squad never came back sir. The southern scouts spotted an army of mecanical things piloted by misshapen dwarves."

"And the northwest?" Drakelius rose to his full 12 feet

"They couldn't go too low but they saw what apreated to be an mass of metal. presumably more dwarves sir."
Fire came from Drakelius's nostrils. Dwarves, why did it have to be alien dwarves.

"Whatever this place is, we know their are dwarves here. seems the stubby wankers hit a growth spurt though. Ready the troops to head north, we crush the drunken monkies tonight."

Hermonie finished her drink stocly. <looks like I'll be in that bloody suit again>
"Send an advance team ahead though, ten bombers, just to soften them up. order em to fly above the cloudline untill the enemy is spoted. Yins did good to comeback."

The ten bombers spotted the enemy after a few hours of flying. and they were in a forest. perfect.

The bombers dropped bellow the cloudline and dropped their napalm on the groups of infantry, setting them and the forest ablaze. then they turned their guns on the aerial units.

Summery: 450pts of bombers attacking. a decent chunk of infantry has been set ablaze and the section of forest they occupy is on fire. the bombers are now flying around, focusing on the aerial units, readying their guns and spears. the rest of the army is moving north.

((Note: Above the Cloud-line, whether there are clouds in the sky or not, means the flight ceiling for infantry units. they are out of range of the vast majority of ground based attacks but they cannot fire on targets on the ground. don't worry, I don't keep any infantry their for long.))
