"Damn! Sorry miss K, let me try that again," said Kretas and tugged again at the autogun he'd jammed into the doorway, taking a better grip this time, and leaning into the thing with all his weight as the elevator swayed and the cable strained.

Strength check versus 40, plus whatever bonus the lever gives me.

Maybe this is good enough?

Sim grunted at the description of the beasts, though it was hard to tell whether she was more or less anguished than before: “Creepy crawlies.” She sighed and tightened her grip on her shotgun: “Sounds like big ‘uns, a few shots ought to put ‘em down or scare ‘em off, but mind the teeth.” She shuddered, trying to stop the images conjured up by her mind at the suggestion of more bodies outside, anxiety twisting in her stomach as she watched Krak try to force the door again, weapon ready.

Already slightly eased by their previous attempt the gap between the doors widen under Krak’s forcing before sliding apart easily once the first couple of inches had been passed, the runners showing bulges where some arcane mechanism had held the doors steady and likely no longer functioned. The sight greeting them was more or less unchanged, but now with the advantage of both time and light from the group’s luminators they could see that clearly that the floor of the elevator ended approximately two feet above the floor of the corridor and the ceiling began at a point just above their heads.

Sim moved to where she could get a clear view and waved her shotgun slowly from left to right, the attached luminator playing across the scene revealing the marked absence of at least the closest of the caterpillar beasts, though one still seemed to be arched over a form some 40 metres away. The closest of the bodies were now the domain of the rats who furtively tried to duck away from the light as it brushed across their scrawny hairless bodies, at least the smaller examples. The largest, almost two feet long simply chattered angrily as they chewed, spitting at them.

It was a safe bet that none of the prone forms were still alive and at a glance, it was clear that some were clad in garments similarly to those of the deceased girl, the others were – or clearly had been – scavengers and the decorations on their outfits bore more than a passing similarity to Sims own – a sight which elicited something between a strangled cry of fear and of wrath as the shotgun in her hand bucked reflexively, blasting the nearest rat into a fine paste as uncontrollable tears began to stream from her eyes.

As the shot echoed down the corridor as every rat shot upright and the sound of chittering intensified to the point it drowned out almost even other noise.

OOC: Damn she rolled well on awareness, shooting and damage, but not on snapping out of shock. Check the OOC thread shortly for how the fight is going to work – not on initiative – and some info on the size of the battle area.]

"Get a grip, Sim. This ain't no time to lose your head," said Kretas, and drew a long, sharp blade from the sheath hidden inside his coat. Once done, he stepped a few meters forward and to the left, sword at the ready, and clearing the entrance for anyone else willing to step forward.

Krak draws a sword and takes a half move (3 meters) to get out of the doorway.

For a moment Castella is speechless as she takes in the scene in the corridor until Sims outburst and the blast from her shotgun shock her back into action. ”Careful with that shotgun Sim. Try not to shoot us if you can.“ Castella says as she reaffirms the grip on her maul and drops down into the corridor stopping just a step from the elevator doorway on the right side of the corridor. “I guess neither rats nor the bugs kill their meals by sticking them with tons of glassy splinters? Save a shot or two for whatever worse things our fight might attract.”

Castella picks her club back up and takes a half move (3 meters) down into the corridor stepping out of the doorway.

Reid curses under his breath as he hears the sound of gunfire, dropping down from the elevator hatch, readying his auto-gun. "Damn it." He aims rifle, pulling the trigger. The bullet whizzes through the air, hitting one of the giant rats directly.

Sim just growled at Krak, biting back a scathing response to watch the corridor as Reid’s gunshot blew a crater in another of the rats, sending its wrinkled corpse skidding across the floor: the loud ring of gunfire had caused a ripple of activity in the rats with over a dozen of the scavengers immediately skittering away, mostly those in the middle distance, though two of the crowd closest to them darted back towards the corridor, the first few surging in a great clump past the shiny black creature feasting on the furthest corpse. It seemed unphased by the noises but lashed out viciously at the first rat which strayed too close, catching it in its menacing mandibles and ended its terrified outburst of chittering with a single powerful bite before forcing the elongated corpse down its gullet and advancing protectively over the body at its many many feet.

Hesitation swept through several of the rats, uncertain of which fate they deemed worse. A few began to inch their way towards the humans, others tried to skirt the beast and still others buried their bloodslick teeth into the nearest body, determined to make the most of their gruesome meal or too hungry to care.

The four remaining nearest to them were scattered between four to twelve metres away and almost as one body surged bounding across the distance in the blink of an eye, bloodlust, hunger and desperation driving them forward against the three foes, small enough as they were to charge together. The first rat leapt at Krak, desperately trying to sink its teeth into his right leg (2 Primitive), two others charged the indomitable Reid, the first slipped on its bloody paws and was used as a springboard by the second, which barrelled towards his chest, trying to find a soft point to bite (7 Primitive). The last balked in fear of the imposing Castella and couldn’t find an opening. Encouraged by the demonstration, several other rates began to work their closer, three more might be in a position to surge forward on the next turn.

That was the least of their concerns though, as unbeknownst to at least two of the trio, snaking out from the gap beneath the elevator was the two missing centipede-like creatures, monopolising on the distraction it slithered from below, the first slithered up behind Castella, who had the briefest moment to respond as the subtle keening she had heard earlier roared in her ears, warning her of the impending attack (7, Pen 4, Primitive). The other kept its head low to the ground, slithering up behind Krak and lashing out at the unsuspecting sergeant’s right leg (8, Pen 4, Primitive).

Seeing this threat Sim called out a warning, but it was too late and she was beaten to taking a shot at the nearest one behind Castella by ‘Luna, who with a snap had drawn the oversized handgun she wielded and fired a raucous shot point blank into the back of its carapace, punching a devastating wound (16, Pen 2) that sent the beast reeling, its body twitching violently as thick blood oozed from the crater, it looked for the briefest moment like it might rise again, but crumpled, gravity slowly pulling its corpse over the edge into oblivion. Jastella drew her long sabre and moved to the edge of the elevator, ready to lash at the creature that had bitten Krak.

OOC: 9’s do not do anything. 10’s invoke Righteous Fury! Which allows you to roll another attack roll and if successful roll another d10 and add that damage to the attack, rolling another 10 gives potential for another Righteous Fury, etc: the rat attacking Reid managed to invoke Righteous Fury, as did ‘Luna, but both then rolled 1’s, so it was short lived. Dodge/Parry reactions can be made as normal against the rats, Castella can against the centipedes from being aware of them, but Krak couldn’t this turn due to failing awareness. Next turn reactions can be made as normal against all creatures.

Krak snorted at the rats pathetically trying to bite him through the flak armour behind his scavenger's coat. He lifted his blade to spear one off, then cursed loudly as something sharp smacked into his other leg, getting past the armour and cutting into his flesh beneath. Swivelling around to face the other, more dangerous, beast he lashed out with his blade.

"You little bastard!" he yelled, putting his strength into the blow, cracking down on the chitinous main body of the beast.

Sensing the Centipede behind her Castella whirls around and tries to block its attack with her weapon but fails. She simply isn’t fast enough. She gasps in shock as it sinks its mandibles into her clothing. Her relief as it fails to do any damage, Emperor bless her carapace armor, is short lived though as Luna blasts the bug off her back point blank with that monstrous gun.

Eyes still slightly widened she turns on the bug trying to bite the sergeant. She tries to carefully aims her blow for the centipede. It really wouldn’t do if she broke the sergeant’s leg right now.

But the blow is a rather weak one. Only 4 primitive impact damage.

Reid makes no sound as the rat digs into him, instead just reeling backwards a couple steps, lowering his auto-gun and pulling the trigger, letting a bullet whiz out of the gun. The bullet hits the rat dead on, flying through it. Reid's eyes scanned the room for another target.

After a brief chat with Blackshade, Reid’s action above has been changed to a melee attack with brass knuckles, the rolls stand, but the damage is adjusted to reflect the changed weapon, making it 5 damage, still enough to render the rat a bloody pulp.

The combined attacks of Krak and Castella on the centipede drove it back momentarily, the former carving a cut through its’ chitinous hide and the latter – though causing no harm – was enough to phase it for a second as it weighed it’s options, it was outnumbered and its companion was dead, but with either barbaric stupidity or animal cunning it rallied and went on the attack, first releasing a piercing keened as it slammed its’ not inconsiderable weight against Castella – to no avail as the battle sister managed to shrug off the attack unphased – before surging forward to strike at the sergeants right arm (6, Pen 4, Primitive).

The brutal crunch that came from the rat impacted by Reid’s fist did not phase its comrades who continued their wild attempts to bite at the group, but also to no avail as they barely avoided the thrashing feet of the group and couldn’t find a piece of exposed flesh. Two of the new rats slowed their advance, pausing to fight over the fresh and bloody corpse of their comrade as it was kicked away in the commotion. The third tried rather more successfully to find an opening, darting up Reids left leg and seeking a soft piece of skin to sink its teeth into (5, Primitive)

In the elevator, Jastella, already in position lashed out at the beast with her long sabre, the blade easily giving her the reach to slice at the creature from within the elevator, but she was unable to connect to the thrashing beast as it weaved on the attack.

The wail of the creature, the echoed roar of ‘Luna’s recent shot and chittering of the rats all left Sims already blunted mind still whirling as she looked from the shotgun in her hands to the crowded passage, a part of her realising that it would be more of a threat in this situation that most of the beasts, and she let it go, the sling on it catching it as she reached for her autopistol instead, her movements painfully sluggish.

‘Luna hesitated, unwilling to fire again due to the number of her companions crowding the beast near her and in the way of a decent shot at the rats clamouring around her allies’ feet, they may not like her as a mutant, but given the pile of corpses, the more bodies around her, the better. She switched the gun for one of her throwing knives and skipped forward into the only vacant spot in the corridor, carefully avoiding the blood patch of the dead centipede creature.

The third centipede still stood its’ lonely vigil at the far end of the corridor, it’s eyeless head waving back and forth from them to the body it jealously guarded, pausing only to tear masses of bloody flesh from it with its’ razor-toothed maw body as rats took their opportunity to surge past to safety, disappearing into the pipe work some way beyond.

Next post should be on Friday.

Krak laughed as the centipede's sharp limb tears a hole in his scavenger's coat and bounced off of his armour. Raising his blade, he prepared to bring the blade down with force again. "Not good enough, y'dumb critter," he cackled, then shut his mouth as the thing lurched away from his blow entirely. "Ah, feck. Agile little creeps, ain't they?" he responded grumpily to no-one in particular.

Annoyed at the lack of impact her last blow had Castella follows through with another one on the same centipede after it turned on the sergeant. This time the blow connects with more force prompting a little smile from Castella.

This time Castella swung her club properly. 10 primitive impact damage.

(I extended the deadline a bit to give people an extra chance to post as only Writer had before, my thanks to Kear and my apologies to Blackshade. I don't want to get bogged down if possible.)

The multi-legged beast reeled from the blow Castella struck against its soft underbelly emitting a piercing shriek as blood oozed from the shattered segments where her club struck and dribbled to form slimy puddles on the floor as it turned that part of its body away, instinctively shielding it from further harm and lashing out at her blindly, trying to stab it’s pincers into her chest (12, Pen 4, Primitive). Its last act of vengeance complete, it turned from them and tried to escape down the elevator shaft.

Seeing the opening, Jastella stabbed down at in and her long sabre bit home with a vicious slash across its carapace (11, Pen 4) sending blood fountaining from the wound in a geyser of sticky gore. Though the others might still lash out at the fleeing opponent, its death seemed assured and when they were done its momentum would push it from the ledge and into the dark passage below.

Its final shriek was enough to unsettle the last of the beasts further along the passage and reluctantly it turned, slithering slowly a half dozen metres down the corridor away from them, after one of the rats.

That left only the rats nibbling at their ankles, which through simple minded ferocity seemed intent on continuing though for the most part their luck fared no better. Though one managed to reach Krak’s back while the sergeant’s attention was on the beast and tried vainly to find a chink in his armour (5, Primitive). One of the two that had set upon the deceased comrade was forced away by its rival and charged instead at ‘Luna who dodged the beastling’s attack easily and speared it through the skull for its efforts (7, Primitive) before finding herself unable to squeeze past or offer any other help for the moment.

Jastella found herself in the same position, her only close target was gone and her other weapons were not suitable and she felt no urge to waste her ammo on such pathetic foes, she could only wait for the moment. Sim, still shaking and unable to control herself at the sight of one of the creatures that was desecrating the remains of her allies slinking away unopposed down the corridor, she raised her stub automatic, aiming at the target through the tears and holding down the trigger, spitting a trio of hot lead down the passage: two of her shots were wild, barely even coming close and serving only to put the fear of god into those few rats which remained in the intermediate ground. The last bullet too seemed to strike short, ricocheting off the metal of the floor before bouncing up into the gut of the creature (8, impact), eliciting a shriek of pain which echoed down the corridor and a ragged cheer from Sim, though it seemed she wouldn’t adding any more to the fight unless she could control herself again.

(You can all make your opportunity attacks against the centipede that tried to run away from melee if you want to muddy the issue of who scored the actual ‘kill’, but that is up to you, it’s dead either way. To make a note, Sim’s pistol is a Stub Automatic, if anyone see’s me referring to it otherwise, correct me and if I complain, point me to this. Next post aiming for Wednesday.)

Krak stepped forward towards the nearest surviving rat and lunged at it with his blade. With the skittering centipede-beasts dead or leaving the fight, all that was left was the clean-up. Once that was done, it was on to the time-honoured Guard tradition of looting the dead. Maybe one of these deaders had a clue to where their missing inquisitor had gone.

I'm not sure how many rats remain near us, but if you could just move Krak up to one and roll for me this round, Kitab, I'd be much obliged. I'm kind of busy with my summer job and I'm dead tired. Might have time for better posts later, but right now I sorely need sleep.

Castella swings her club at whichever rat was still around, but her swing fails to connect. “Cursed vermin!” is her only comment on that before she she starts looking around for any stragglers or anything that might have been attracted by all the noise before focusing on her comrades “Was anyone injured?”
