Unless we use the behemoth of a lizard to pry it open... that'd be an architect action, though.

(And the dismantled door could provide the solid ground for the tiktiki pen, doubt those buggers can dig through that slab of metal.)

Architect and engineer, actually. However, using the doors like that is a waste of good supplies. Lets see how well my kiln works. If it's good, I can fire up some nice thick slabs. Once fired the clay will be fluxed back into stone. (As it is, raw clay is rotten stone. :D ) The Tiktikki's won't be able to get through that.

The Tik'tikki pen can be floored with hard stones, with dirt on top for sleep-burying for the tik'tikkis. That should keep 'em satisfied, as long as we keep 'em fed and keep a light source near the pen.

If we can manage to dismantle the doors, it would do something for our waining metal supply.

Speaking of, how much does anyone know about purifying raw ore? Looks like we'll need to soon... and the shiny stuff the scouts found might just be metallic in nature.

((Please forgive me if this has been brought up before and I stuck it in the wrong thread! I'm still new!! *puppy dog eyes to the general assembly* ))

well one way to purify raw ore is to super heat it and than screen the unnecessary materials from the metal. Like the process of smelting. Humans have developed a couple processes of Extractive metallurgy here is a link from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extractive_metallurgy hope this is helpful :D

Good morning clan Tei'kaliath!!!

I see the Relentless just got a good whipping for that little stunt they pulled. Maybe that will put them in line but I doubt it.

The Blacksmith is nearly out of metal and the Architect is out of building material. I think a lot of our problems could be solved by opening up those metal doors in the basement. There might be a mine full of wealth down there or it could be an all purpose bottomless pit. I am looking forward to kicking the Jokerlady down the hole while screaming THIS IS Tei'kaliath.

I'm wondering why we're worried about a rock mine when we're surrounded by the stuff. Could we not find a suitable cliff edge and put the slaves to work cutting proper stones free? We'd need the proper tools for that - and giving slaves tools that could double as weapons may not be such a grand idea - but perhaps it could be a future project once we've settled the slave aspect?
Just a thought really.

Well, if we can get into that mine, we'll get rocks as part of the by-blow of mining for metal. Not the best dressed stone, mind you, but that's what we got earth-magic for. :)

This is kind of what I was thinking, too, especially if it could be done in a way that also makes the cliffs around the ruins even more sheer as added defense. All it would take is a few hammers and some splitting spikes that could be used by the builders, and then the bad slaves could be put to work in a chain-gang carrying the stones back up to the ruins. That would keep any tools that might be used as weapons out of their hands.

Mine rock tends to be more like rubble since you have to chip away slowly to get anywhere in an enclosed space. By cutting some of the surface rock free - the light reflecting rock that the scouts found a while ago might be neat to build a city out of - we can decide on size, shape, and have the ability (through experience) to cut what we need, and not just make do with what we can find. The less earth magic we have to use - the better, because it will take more magic to fuse thousands of bits of rock together, as opposed to the lines of cut stone. You have to start with good materials to have a good final product.
We also are of lack of a mana specialist at this point to allow us to really fuse things together.

Actually after the invention of the wire saw it was possible to cut stone in an enclosed space. It is not that the wire saw is a particularity advanced technology. The Romans could make wires. They just never had the idea of using a wire as a stone cutting tool.

Would you not need to be able to get on either side of the material in order to cut the stone though? Sure, you could cut in an enclosed space, but you would have to clear the rubble around the selected material first - and then you have to drag the sucker up and out of the hole. At least in an open pit mine you can make sure you build your ramps properly if you are digging down - and if we're cutting away from the cliff to create that defense, then we just have to hoist it further up.
Less dragging from the mine to the ruins as well.

Thank you. I've been trying for a while now to make clear some of these points in the builder thread.

Also, Kirio theorizes that the reflecting rocks are an extension of the Chel'el'sussoloth main cavern's roof rock. Rock that has been modified using High Art to prevent against earth magic effectiveness and earthquake damage. We don't know this for sure, though, and at any rate, figuring out what the rock is would have to wait for a sample.

If Kirio's right, such rock would probably be ideal to construct buildings or walls from...If we can manage to do it without earth magic, that is.

If the mine rock can be used for construction, then that might solve the problem of having to find a location to get stone from. On the other hand, mining ore isn't usually done in a way that produces suitable building materials (wire saws, a modern-ish feature, aside). We'll have to see how it turns out. Nothing wrong with starting up temporary rock-cutting procedures in the meantime.
