Surface - Crossing the Desert

"Maybe... but I doubt it." Trinita whispered back. "Humans tend to have a differnt kind of Devil then we do, and judging by the look in their eyes, were the first drows they've probely ever seen.", the soliders did give them look of awe and fear of the unknown. "I think we would have heard from someone of drow comming here before us but I won't rule it out but we do happen to have a sealer with us."

The solders escorted the drow into the village that consistied of mostly mud huts with thacted roofs. The only buildings made out of stone were lords home and the walls to the fortress.

"Alright pack, me and Seth are going to speak with the lord of this place." Jemilla turned to the rest of them. "I'm going to see what this devil bussiness is, while I'm out, I want you to rest the horses and get them watered. I shall return."

As the Jemilla and Seth continued on with the town malitia. Trinita and the others dismounted. He felt a little staddle sore but he didn't complain about it.

Soon some of the men of the village started show up. Trinita took this moment to ask them about these devils, "Exuse men good people. Who are these devils that plauge your village." the shock on their faces when Trinita spoke the language was clear but a large man with black beard did step up to speak "I can tell you about the devil, pointed ears. They are lions, great white beasts. Every one of them is a devil."

"They attack our village and all the other villages along the border lands." "They kill our women and our children, day or night, it does not matter."

An older man, with a beard so white it might have been sheep wool, spoke out "We are not cowards eared ones, but we are afraid for our women and children, Every night they sleep behind the walls because they even enter our homes to kill."

"Akintunde summoned the hell pride. He sends them to kill us and drive us away." The large man said. Trinita and the wolf pack were stunned by what they have learned. Quite until now, Trinita asked "Who is Akintunde?" "Akintunde is thier master. He is a black Shaman who claims these lands."

Ilnari'se was glad of the few short days they spent resting at the town. The addition of Warwick to their pack didn't sit well with her but she wasn't about to question her commander. She decided to simply ignore Warwick's presence and as such hadn't spoken two words to her since she joined them. They set off again and finally reached another town in the middle of nowhere. She was near Trinita when Warwick started whispering to him. She pricked up her ears to listen, curiously. She had sharp ears and while she didn't quite catch some of the words the general meaning was clear. She snorted. It was far more likely to simply be common superstition and folklore. A drought, a baby dies and the goblins blame devils. Besides, they wouldn't have let them anywhere near their homes if their devils were drow.

The commander took Seth to investigate the devil matter. Obeying orders she dismounted and looked around at the little mud houses, failing to see anything remotely resembling a stable or anywhere to water the mounts she was going to ask Trinita to find out; she knew several goblin tongues but this one wasn't one of them. He was already busy talking to a local however. When he translated she sighed, it was certainly curious. Giant white lions, if they were real and big enough they might make good mounts but that wouldn't help them fulfil their orders and surely the commander would have more reliable information soon enough. "Fascinating as that is, our orders were to take care of the horses, please ask them to point us to a stable, dearest."

After dismounting, Warwick did not understand understand what anyone was talking about, the goblins were far outside any trade rout that any drow caravan even went near, so she reserved herself to wait for whatever was being talked about to end, and her to be informed on what is going on here. But what she could make out from how the goblins sounded, and moved, they were spooked in a bad way. Warwick was use to the sounds of whispered rumors being yelled out loud, they always have a feeling of accusation, but this was fear, it made her uncomfortable.

"Yes dear." Trinita said quietly, not sharing his mates optimism about the lion. He wasn't an empath but Trinita could smell and even feel the fear coming off these frontier folk. "Were can we water our horses good humans?" "There is a small lake over there. Be warned thou. You are on your own there, the lion use that also may strike any time." "Thank you for telling us this." Trinita nodded.

Leading the way, Trinita pulled out his sword and scanned his surroundings like wary wolf. "What do you make of this." He said to his companions but dared not turn his head away from the landscape around them, fearing for sudden strike at any moment. "Frontier folk don't scare easy... nor do they let women and children sleep in the barracks unless there is a real danger. Sharess these are no normal lions, animals simply don't pluck people out of their homes like this."

"Worrying, yes" The big wolf replied. She didn't sound too worried however, nor did her demeanour suggest it. The one thing that gave away her tension was the act of reaching over her shoulder to draw the longsword a short way and test the blade with her thumb. Confirming that it was nice and sharp - as it should be considering the amount of time she spent sharpening the damn thing- she lowered her hand to her waist and fiddled with the flask she'd picked up at the hume city they'd stopped at. It was tied to her belt and wouldn't come off easily. She took a swig of the stuff, it was some kind of local alcoholic drink, strong, thick and generally foul tasting. She screwed the cap back on with her teeth, had to since the other hand was holding her horse's reigns. At the same time scanning the land around her again but there was nothing untoward to spot. So she continued to walk at her steady pace.

"We'll see when we see 'em. Hope we don't."

Warwick had her right hand on her sword, griping it tightly, her left hand on her right arm, ready to grasp her shield from her backpack. "ya, Demon Lions, sounds like something no one wants to meet, well unless your part of the Vloz'ress." Looking around carefully, she had hoped this trip was going to be a simple 'prove the goblins that we are smarter them them' trip, not slay the demon quest, so she just mentally tallied another mark for her bad luck list. "Question, could this Akintunde, this black Shaman, be fae? If I could control demon lions, I would just use the beast to make the goblins work for me, you know, just as a thought. But just sending the things out to attack, day or night, that sounds a bit off to me, even for just scaring the goblins off, it's not the best tactic." Warwick knew that non of the others would know any more then she did, but the conversation made her feel more safe.

"Akintunde doesn't sound much like a fae name to me." Trinita said as he watched his horse drink from cool water. "Its sounds like a black humans name, the same as some of those slaves in the cages in the caravan. A few years ago, I spent some time in the Sarhara and they had the great cats but they kept to themselves and didn't attack humans. Who knows, this Akintunde might not be that great at tactics. It'll take more then a couple of scary lions to move a settlement."

It was then Trinita noticed the pile of clothing beside the water. Somebody was washing their clothing and left them scattered. It was then he saw a couple of white blur dash away from a shrub a short distance away. "There! I saw something." he pointed to where the blurs were, unsure if anyone else caught it or if his mind was playing ticks.

"EEEHHH!!" Warwick quickly drew her sword, and pulled out her shield turning in the direction Trinita pointed. When she pointed her sword in that direction, A bush rustled as as something was coming out "ehhh" what Warwick saw was a halm female, only covered by a loos wight sheet, she could also see another somewhat younger female barely covering herself with the same sheet. Their faces looked worried, and a bit red, but nothing threatening, so Warwick sheathed her sword. turning to Trinita "I think we may have interrupted a privet moment."

Her tired mount moved of to the water of it's own accord and started drinking. It didn't seem at all bothered but at Trinita's call Ilnari'se had her sword halfway out of her scabbard when she realised that it was just two goblin girls with a sheet. She drew it anyway and scanned the area around them, just because these were just two here didn't mean there wasn't any danger out there. The moment passed and she thought out loud. "Mounts should warn us if there's predators near, but the girls... fools or know something we don't."

Giving the two embarrassed girls an exasperated look she reached down and snatched up some clothing throwing it at them. they babbled gratefully in their odd little language and ducked behind the bushes to get changed. Peering around her again, wishing it was night she spotted a small haze in the distance. She stared at it uncertainly, not knowing what she was seeing, Was it one of them Mirages? "Hey, do you see that?" No, it seemed to be coming closer it was dust and sand being kicked up in the distance, considering there was no wind that meant something was moving towards them or in there general direction at least.

Children... I was spooked by children, was all Trinita could think to himself at the moment... right after his heart stopped racing. "Yah... I think we did." Trinita said to War with a big sigh of relief after collecting himself. It was more then a little embarrassing for him to react like that.

"I'm sorry I should have looked before I yelled." he was going to say more about it but he decided not to, since nobody seemed to be mad at him.

Trinita squinted at the mirage when Ilnari'se said something about it. Even the horses started to watch it closely at it moved towards there general direction. It was the children that were the first to speak, when the mirage slowly turned into a herd of unattended and frightened goats. They both called out "Papa!" several times and ran back quickly to the village; Holding their loose clothing.

Soon some of the villagers turned up armed along with some Militia men. Talking about a missing Goat herder and that the 'devil' has claimed another victim. Trinita looked back at the villagers and then back at his comrades, "Lets get out of here."

Looking at the armed goblins, Warwick was reminded of how easily outsiders are blamed for whatever goes wrong in a community, and do do not understanding what they were saying, it made her unconformable. "ya, we sould move on before they clam were with the devils they fear so much." her voice cracked a small bit, she was not a trained solder, and for her the gathering of armed peasants often meant things were turning bad fast, even more-so for outsiders with ADA.

Warwick mounted her hoarse with haste, though a but clumsily, it made it easy to see she was eager to go, but not without the rest of the group. The hoarse on the other-hand was not yet done with drinking, and was slow to ready herself to move out.

The halme girls ran off crying probably for their mothers and the horses were nervous. It was time to go. Ilnari'se nodded in agreement. They set off back towards the little settlement as quickly as they could. Warwick having a little trouble with her horse, which seemed to be lacking a sense of self-preservation.

Several men were shooing people into buildings and barricading doorways, others were drawing weapons. She saw a young woman drag a dog inside by its collar, it was barking hysterically. Two young men ran towards them as they reached the town's edge dragging at the horses' reigns and babbling urgently. She had no idea what they were saying but she guessed they wanted to take them somewhere safe. The look of terror on their faces didn't need translating. She turned to look back at the dust cloud and drew her claymore.

"Let me guess. Big lions incoming."

It was hard for Trinita to mount back onto his horse, all the animal did is circle around him, whenever he tired to mount. The animal clearly scared from the panic. "Fucking horse." Trinita cursed the animal as he finally got onto it. He was just short of falling behind the group when it happened.

There was this thunderous roar. It was not load but it could clearly be heard above all the noise that was happening. Trinita could feel the roar in his chest. So could his horse as it whined and panicked again, stopping where he stood. "Damn it horse-" Trinita stopped as white lioness leapt up at him, raking and tarring with its claws on the horses back and then grabbing ahold of the Trinita and knocking him down.

Warwicks hoarse was startled big time, and It took her time to regain control of it, kicking up some dust as as it panic. When she finally got the hoarse to settle down, she turned back to the group and saw Trinita on the ground with a lion on him. Though he was was in danger, Warwick could clearly see that the lion could not get through the armor, and it was already surrounded by the rest of the Sarghress. Warwick pulled her sword, as being the only one not in armor, she could not take an attack like that and last long, so she had to be ready to be on the offensive.

Ilnari'se's horse danced nervously and then tried to throw her when the lion roared. It failed the first time but succeeded on its second attempt, the heavy claymore in her right hand unbalancing her. She landed, rolling on to her back and saw what was happening behind her. She charged towards Trinita and the massive lion. They were already being surrounded by the other raiders. Then she spotted another white blur out of the corner of her eye, another lion, she barely had time to twist and ram its head with the claymore as it pounced at her neck, she had the good fortune of hitting it close to its eye with the cross-guard, causing it to flinch back. She shrieked at it furiously, even as another turned up. She had to get to Trinita, had to sort things out, what to do. She did the only thing she could think of, she jumped towards the lions shrieking like a demon. The lions were so surprised they backed off for a second. She took the opportunity to run to the other raiders knowing that she was far too vulnerable alone. They'd managed to slaughter the massive beast but were struggling to get it off him as most of them were busy eyeing the other lions nearby. She stuck her swords in the sand with a grimace, it would blunt the blades terribly, then she helped roll the beast off him. Damn the thing was heavy.

"You ok dear?" She turned and spied Warwick her eyes full of concern. The caravan guard's sword was drawn to defend herself but the woman had no armour of course. She'd have to get the woman some spares at some point. She swore foully. "Stick together. Get to the town," she growled at the group.
