Surface: Swords of Wolf Vally (Privet)

Surface: Swords of Wolf Vally (Privet)

This pilgrim to the surface was an uneventful one and Gaul was thankful, but this weather was getting colder every day. His body ached slightly in the chill from his old wounds. "I knew we should have turned back." Gaul muttered under his helmet as he ushered his Percheron along. The dirt roads were as hard as stone and the grass was frost bitten.

Winter was almost here.

Standing tall on his large horse with his round shield strapped to his back, his black chain mail covered him from head to toe, with a bear skin cloak keeping the chill out. To the naked eye most people wouldn't know they were looking at a Kyorl Templar. Unless they saw his gauntlets and the soul stones in them.

He didn't want to attract any unwanted attention to his Kyorl status up here, how ever unlikely some one would recognize him.

(This is a privet thread but for those that may be interested, Koryl character may be accpected into it. Limited thou.)

((Since Raknel hasn't replied, I came up with a plausible reason Pon'i might head to the surface. If it messes up any of your plans, lemme know and I'll change it.))

Pon'i petted Thun distractedly. Gaul had managed to secure him a mount, and this was a rather new experience. Usually he walked or used his floater. The horse felt odd underneath him: he could feel its muscles moving as it walked steadily along.

He was delivering a private bundle to the Order of Serenity. Not an especially far journey, and one he'd been on before. He supposed the Order of Serenity was the hub of all Kyorl overworld communications. Nice people, but rather shy. He always delivered the messages with a bow to the outside "guard." The guard rarely if ever wore armor... Pon'i was rather peace-loving for a drow and appreciated the relaxed gesture. He had never been inside the building.

He had all his overworld supplies: extra gemstones to help fight mana deprivation sickness, a wide variety of clothing to counter the unpredictable see'zuns, a good supply of rather tasty food, and Thun'der, his overworld pet. She looked like a black and white cat, but had a secret weapon: a foul-smelling spray that rendered most enemies immediately uninterested. Usually she was very active above ground: running and playing in the seldom-seen sunlight. But today she opted instead to sit in front of the saddle. Pon'i couldn't blame her. The horse was probably warmer than the ground.

He pulled his thick, woolen cape a little tighter around him. It was cold!

"You look a little cold Poni." Gaul said as he looked down at the Olath. "We'll stop at the first town and get ourselves warmed up and some surface food to eat." They shouldn't be too far off from the nearest town.

Gaul was also looking forward to some lunch. He was looking forward at a steak or some lamb. He uncapped a flask and took a swig of some really strong stuff. It warmed his belly and cleared his noise.

"This will warm your body. Careful, its strong stuff." He offered some to Poni but it was just then he noticed something or someone rather was stumbling along the hilly roads.

* * *
-Earlier-
"I'm sorry my-" *Slap* "Don't you sorry me! You never said the surface was going to be this cold, this dirty, this bight, this... Filthy! I haven't lied to my mother to travel up her for nothing you know." Freilya Sharn, second in line of house Ebonmar stood tall as she slapped her one time mate, bearer of no females and her good for nothing gaud Thobias.

"Now that you fixed this wagon start, moving!"

Thobias did as he was told and left the spoiled 'princess' alone with her protector twin Malerna. "Where over a thousand miles away from chel and he..." Freilya then felt something cut her in the stomach. Looking down at the wound in her stomach and the bloody dagger in Malerna's hand, was enough for her instincts to take over as she blasted Malerna in the face with a hasty mana bolt and flee from the wagon.

* * *
-Present-
She was dragging her feet now. Freilya felt cold and alone, the pain in her stomach flared up every time she took a step.

How could this happen? both her ex lover and once protector twin turning against her, they must have conspired against her. Despite all the good shes done for them, they are no better then the dirt eating peasants . She'll survive this to live another day.

She must be dreaming or did she see to people on horse back "Help..." was all the she could manage before the pain was too much and made her double over and sink on her knees.

Sarani sat huddled on her mount with all the grace of a sack of potatoes. Her mount was a horse called star for the white mark on its forehead. Some people had no imagination. She rode a little way behind the others, she was in a bad mood and didn't want to take it out on them.

She decided she hated the surface. It was too cold and too bright up here. The cold had surprised her. Why was it so cold? No idea, but she didn't really care enough to ask. She wore full, plain armour and had the thickest cloak she'd been able to find wrapped around her. At least her father had advised her on what to take.
She gripped the reigns tightly. She wasn't the most experienced of riders and the journey to the surface had been nerve wrecking. At least her gauntlets were keeping her fingers nice and warm. Her toes were frozen.

A faint cry made her look up and she kicked her horse to catch up to the others. 'I swear I'll never ride again.' she thought for the third time that morning as the blasted thing went straight into a gallop.

"What was that?" she asked when she caught up with Poni and Gaul. Her voice sounded muffled due to the scarf covering her mouth and nose under her helmet. She peered forward and saw what might be a person on the ground up ahead but she couldn't be certain.

((Note: Serra'tae is timewarping at the moment, just so you know))
((Here by invitation via PM by django))

Serra'tae was not a typical Templar. For one thing, Templars did not usually get semi-ostracized for being somewhat heretical. For another, Templars didn't usually get shunted from job to job without getting a Warden to follow at some point. Finally, most Templars did not get strong armed into pilgrimage escort for someone they knew nothing about.

Still, the guy had seemed nice enough. Gaul was the name. Told him about the pilgrimage, the desire to go incognito, the possibility of combat, etc. Serra'tae told him about the paperwork and his status as a semi-outcast for heretical views regarding tainted and their execution (a decidedly "leave them alone and kill the demon" stance). And yet he hadn't been smited with a mana bolt, so that was good. Serra'tae had resolved to do a good job for the guy, but had kept at a bit of a distance for the duration of the trip, staying behind a cool mask of professionalism. It had the best results so far in terms of conflict avoidance.

Anyway. Their incognito status meant that he'd forgone his Kyorl emblazoned wear, wearing instead generic, if somewhat better quality than usual, merc wear. A medium weight combat vest made out of many overlapping metallic plates, strung together with heavy gauge wire, gave him good mobility, and he could easily protect himself with his longsword (of extra large hilt length; the entire thing was about five feet long), gauntlets, and heavy greaves from melee attacks. He also wore thick, padded boots and wrapped a cloak of thick spidersilk around him as tightly as possible. Seriously, why the hell was it this cold? He reached up and tugged his armored fur hat further down, the better to keep his ears warm. Thank god for the... what was it, bakalava? ...that the traders at Machike had sold him, or else he was sure he'd be missing a nose by now.

As he rode, providing a rear guard action, he noticed the approaching figure. He followed Sarani at a gallop, unsheathing his blade as he went, and pulled up beside Gaul.

"Sir, I'm sure you've noticed the incoming unknown," he said, saluting with his free hand. "What are your orders?"

Gaul noticed the kneeling figure before the younger Drowssus Galloped up to him. "I don't know yet." Gaul said as he looked down at her his daughter.

As Tae caught up with them and asked what are his orders, Gaul wasted no time addressing both the young warriors "Don't do any rash. She's tainted, I felt that much. Keep your eyes out for trouble, I want to know whats going before we do anything."

"Poni if any bad happens, don't be afraid to take off. I don't expect you to do any fighting and I'll not begrudge you for it."
With that said Gaul kicked his horse into a gallop and approached the figure.

As Gaul got closer to the figure, he saw that it was a wounded female and a Sharn to boot. Its been a long time since he killed a Sharn and thought he could get away with it. She didn't seem to notice the group was mostly made of Kyorls, thanks mostly for not dressing up as one.

She was tired and bleeding heavily from the stomach, Gaul asked her what happened and she must have been delirious from blood loss or not bright in the head but she told him everything from about how her and her sister were looking for some family ruins, how she was betrayed and left her for dead, how many there are and how she left notes in her dairy.

Gaul helped her up but only did so to get her in the right proposition to snap her neck and seal her seed. He rummaged though her peruse and pockets, looking for anything else useful. He did find the some smaller things but gold, ada, expensive perfume and a diary were the biggest things. "Well this is an interesting find."

Serra'tae nearly fell off his horse.

"Sir!" he shouted, aghast. "Wh-, I mean-, FUCK!! Was that explicitly necessary?!"

As you can see, Serra'tae has very strong feelings against the unnecessary purging of the tainted. Namely: Those who are of no threat need not be purged in the name of the Goddess.

Sarani glanced at him in irritation, before continuing to scan the surroundings. Trying to pick up movement or any trace of mana. She couldn't sense anything out of the ordinary though. "Well of course it was, she was tainted. There's no cure. Honestly, if you're so against purging tainted I'm surprised you haven't defected. Just keep an eye out will you."

She was baffled by him. Why did people tolerate such a heretic of a templar? Why was he a templar to begin with? It was beyond her.

Serra'tae bit his lip to keep from saying anything that would get him purged on the spot for heresy.

"I just... thought we could be a bit more... civilized about it," he said, compromising between his views and the proper ones whilst simultaneously maintaining a general scan of the surroundings. "You know. Chain her down and do a ceremony. Not snap her neck and toss her body to the wild beasts."

(Bah, one more post for everyone until Bamawing gets a post in.)

With his helmet on, it was hard to tell who he was looking at the most. He quitely stood there, looking at them while he replaced his soul stone. He didn't seem to care about the corpse at his feet as he walked back to his horse and just left it.

"Listen to me Serra'tae." Gaul said as he got back on his horse and looked the young lad in the eye. "This is what we do." he pointed at the corpse "We kill those with demons, clean and simple. Were you expecting me to tie her down, cut her open while hearing her plea. Get real kid this isn't a game and the next time we come across tainted kid, I'll have you smash its head against the pavement and toss him into a fire to understand what is to be a Templar... or Warden." He was ice cold and if they could see his eyes, they could see personal experience.

It disheartened Gaul to see such a man in the order, the last thing he wanted to see was another good man turn into a cold killer. Perhaps he could scare Tae or his daugher into something less involved in the killing. Then again he may not.

"If you don't have the heart to do it. You should leave and join crusaders, there is no shame in it." he kicked his horse and moved towards the road, "You'll live a better life for it." He soften a bit at the last part.

((Sorry this has taken so long!! I've got... shh... a job now. Yay! But I need to keep this very quiet - knowledge is power, and my asshole soon-to-be-ex-husband doesn't need any more of that.))

Pon'i was grateful to hear about the break. He was also curious about the drink, but the next thing he knew, Gaul was... well, killing someone.

Far more surprising than that, one of the Suus objected. Pon'i felt for the guy. He knew a nice fellow - ex-Kyorl, thanks to a taint. Worked as a bodyguard now. Every time they met, the poor guy asked for news about his old home. Pon'i offered a million times to take a letter to his sister, but the man wouldn't hear of it.

"Serra'tae," he said gently, "I don't like killing any more than you do. But I've got her to think about." He pointed to the small black-and-white-cat curled up in front of him. "Drawing it out would get someone very frightened and upset. And if Thun'der here sees people getting frightened and upset... trust me, you don't want that to happen. I'm not a fighter, but she can clear out a marketplace. She can make the smell of Kon'vule mating seem pleasant."

He shifted uncomfortably in his saddle. "Could we bury the body, or at least cover it?" Seemed a reasonable compromise to him. "I can handle the weather a little longer."

((Erm, good luck with your husband smiting, Bamawing?))

Serra'tae bit his lip and clenched his hand over his sword's grip hard enough to make it creak.

"Yes sir," he said quietly, "I hear and obey." Stiffly, he flipped his sword over and returned it to its sheath with a quiet -snik-. He gathered his cloak about him and withdrew from the group.

When Pon'i spoke, Serra'tae barely paid attention. He did take the time to be quietly furious that Pon'i seemed to care more about his pet than about the dead Sharen, but there was nothing to be done.

"Sir," he said to Gaul before they continued. "Pon'i brings up a good point. May I immolate the body before we continue?"

Rilla'me sat on her horse and said nothing, having nothing to add and feeling it wouldn't be appreciated anyway. She had to say it was hard seeing people killed. but that didn't change the fact that someone had to do it, however awful it made you feel.
She muttered a quick prayer to Sharess and reminded herself that the tainted were already lost.

"Normally I'd agree with you on burning the body Serra'tae, but those who injured her might still be nearby. We'd lead them straight to us. Burying her would take too much time and energy."

"I spouse so." He answered Ponis and Taes question. Turning his horse around, he dismounted "The horses need to graze and we could use some time to get some rest and get something to eat. Were still a while away, before we hit a human village."

"Your right thou," he walked over to Rilla "If anything that Sharn told me was true, then we shouldn't be expecting them. She was stabbed by her 'protector' twin and left her to die. Were lucky we found her when we did, any longer and she would have just died out without telling us about her sister and her group."

Gaul looked in the direction the Sharn came from. He put money on that they were going to cross paths once they hit that village and in fact he was sure if he rode his horse hard for the next twenty to thirty minutes down the road he might just run into them but there would be plenty of time for killing later.

"How are you holding up kid? Is everything to the surface to your liking?" He held up his hand to help her down. "Next time we'll come back when its summer its a lot less cold." Once she was down, Gaul would russle her head as if she didn't have a helmet. Spite being a Templar, he was a affectionate man and loved his kids dearly.
