Chel'el'sussoloth, Anara'wata's Office

Just a stones throw away from the (in)famous Dragon's Den Colliseum, just down the hill where it is perched, several buildings stand. Stores, offices, and warehouses of all kinds dominate the area, all trying to cash in on the flow of customers that the Colliseum provides. One such office building is used as the office of a business woman by the name of Anara'wata, who currently had a little problem.

The office of the business woman spoke volumes of the character of it's owner. The room was meticulously clean, with lighting provided by strategically placed mana gems on the walls and ceiling. The back of the room was dominated by a large group of shelves that was filled to the brim with scrolls, monitering the ins and outs of company property. A single desk, stone with a slab of obsidian on top and a map of the city unrolled, sat in front of a chair with tiktikki leather cushions.

Anara was sitting in that chair, sighing. It seemed that she had only been able to attract a few people in to help her with her little problem. As was usual in this city, none of the Vals were willing to step in until the problem affected them, and thus Anara had sought out other independant parties to help her do so herself. However, she had been hoping for... more.

Looking across her desk at the other individuals assembled, Anara couldn't help but feel disappointed. Still, help was help. She decided there would be no point in waiting any longer. "As you know, we are here because there are parties within the city which have been preying on the weaker merchant groups, stealing cargo and murdering employees. They then proceed to sell the stolen goods at more then double it's worth to desperate buyers. This state of affairs cannot continue. My clients are being bled dry, and every lost caravan means losses in hundreds of ada for the company." Anger pitched her voice at this, and it was obvious that she was very dedicated to the company she worked for.

"Most of you are merchants, and have also been affected by these bandits. That means that you have a personal stake in the matter, on top of your payment, which will be handled afterward. As for where the goods are... this" With that, Anara pointed down at the map of the city, toward a warehouse just inside of the Sarghress city gate. The area was popular with merchants and thieves (same profession really) due to the lack of taxes on goods being trafficked to and from the city, and a perfect place to hide stolen goods. "...is where my sources" (Otherwise known as giving chocolate drops to young urchins in exchange for information. Slightly illegal, but it worked) "say the cargo is held before being resold. If we can break in, and see who the mastermind behind this operation is, we may be able to stop the thefts permanently."

Anara looked back up expectantly. "Questions? Ideas? Concerns?

*A slightly chunky man raised a large hand, his otherwise jovial face heavy with frustration. He was Kal'Alek of the Illhar'dro, a restaurant-owner famous for his popular desserts.*

"Over the past six months, I have lost more than a thousand ada in cargos of fruits and grain from the surface. Investigations have not shown any leads, and we are nearing the end of the season. If action is not taken fast, I and people like me will either have to pay double for even further reaching expeditions or be without fresh fruit throughout the winter, neither of which is acceptable. Therefore, I would ask what, if anything, I can do to help speed up results."

"Loss of profit minimal for me," said Kae'gaza from his place near the door. "Encroachments on neighborhood increasing, nearby stores have reported lost goods, fear I will be next, work too important to allow to be stolen or destroyed. Recommend destruction of enemy base of operations via overwhelming force if alacrity is necessary. Can provide destructive weaponry for such a venture." He pulled out a notepad and rifled through his notes. "Will require time and money, however."

Hila had never intended to be a mercenary, but ada was ada. No, ada was more: it was power. And while she had really hoped this would be an open-and-shut case... specifically, opening and shutting a netherworld gate... it was the best opportunity she had, and she would take it. Unlike Gertrude, her demon seed, she was capable of patience.

The stuff was apparently being held near the Sargress gate. Same gate she came in on. She wasn't familiar with Chel yet, but this gate seemed to be a popular spot. So the thief could be anyone. Fantastic. Hey, she got paid by the day. No hurry here.

"It sounds pretty straightforward," she commented, running a hand through her Vloz-orange hair. "Spy around until we find the stuff, take note who has the stuff, and then turn them into a nice, nutritious meal." She shrugged. Perhaps this wouldn't be so lucrative after all. Well, it was still the best opportunity she had. "Simple. What are we looking for, exactly?"

The fact that she stood out like... well, a Vloz'ress... hadn't even crossed her mind.

Merrill stood looking haggard and scarred as ever. Her helmet was tucked under her left arm and she idly scratched behind her torn right ear. She wondered briefly how strong a force it had to be to even raid a mercantile company with the funds they had, then again she didn't really care with a passion. Writing out in the air at forehead level words began to form in clear view of present company.

Whatever we decide lets just get it done, I have some skill in shifting light around, perhaps that would help for sneaking in and spying? Looking over at Hila, she jerked her right thumb at her, Also, I'd prefer not having an even remote chance of getting tainted or attacked by whatever she could possibly summon.

She knew she was making a bit of an assumption at the fact, but by the sheer looks of Hila she didn't seem the kind to exactly fight with steel and strength. Compared to herself clad in light plate and with an axe hammer at her side, Merrill was looking to be the only one having to fight personally.

Hila dismissed Merrill's concern with a wave of her hand. "You'll be fine. Velma's not a messy eater, and she always comes when called." Velma really wasn't a messy eater as far as demons went. And the stone that served as her house had a particularly strong retrieval. "'Sides, I've had her out in front of my pre-tainted family with no accidents. No sweat."

"Attacks still a risk," said Kae'gaza, pacing left, then right. "History shows complacency leads to disaster, examples: Nidraa'chal Wars, Destruction of Dutan'vir, both cases where individuals believed nothing that the worst case scenario was impossible, but were defeated by it. Recommend keeping a contingency plan, just in case. Automatic nether sealing gauntlets acceptable in case of accidental demonic assault?" He straitened his shirt restlessly.

Anara looked around at the people gathered, eyeing the Vloz'ress nervously. She didn't like working with tainted, but she also like promoting the company as an equal opportunity employer. Willingness to work with anyone helped bring customers, which meant more ada in her pockets. Besides, the rumors about the Vloz couldn't all be true. "Right?"

Turning back to the artisan with the recommendation, she nodded. "No point in taking chances. We don't know who we're dealing with. Better to be prepared for the worse while hoping for the best then vice verse." Anara then looked at the entire group. "The pay will be a hundred ada a day, plus expenses, I have the contract ready if anyone wishes to read through it." This was a company matter, and Anara liked to keep records of everything. Obsessive? Yes. But it also made sure that no one was screwing her over.

Getting up and pulling the relevent scroll out, Anara continued. "Returning to the point, we only have a few days before my company's next caravan comes in. We have until then to track down the ringleader and put a stop to these attacks."

By the holy Netherworld, non-tainteds were weird! She knew that she struck fear and loathing into your standard Kyorl's heart, but these dark Cheleans seemed just as frightened. Huh. And why did they keep bringing up the Nidraa'chal War? As far as she was aware, the Vloz'ress weren't involved in that. It was some other crazy upstart clan, one less concerned with the well-being of demons. Or drow, for that matter.

"I'd like ta give the contract a quick read before I sign it," she said. "And I'm not trying to scare anybody. If it'll make ya feel better, ya can have an automatic nether sealing... thing. I'll even try to scare one up myself. But I have a condition. You must stay behind me when I let Velma out. But then, ya gonna want to do that anyway." She winked.

"Combat not my best skill, can help you disable golems or open locked doors, as well as provide an explosive or a method of entry," sighed Kae'gaza. "Plan is to find the base, then pose as a delivery team for my "protection fee" yes? After infiltration is complete, deploy and destroy enemy base, yes?"

*Sensing that the only way he could help in this case was through funding, neither being a warrior nor a powerful mage, Kal'alek raised his hand again.*

"How many people will be needed for the operation?"

Merril rolled her eyes and merely looked a bit sullen standing around. Her expression stoic, she leaned against the wall wondering what could be done. As far as she was concerned she would help out with whatever the plan was. Lets just hurry up and get going already. The words faded in replacing the previous words. She began to mess around as strands of light popped on to her finger tips connecting each of them like string. Gently weaving her fingers and the light in to small shapes and patterns.

"Unwise," said Kae'gaza. "Plan necessary for success of the mission! Unless of course, deathwish, one has."

Hila regarded Merill calmly. "Hey," she said in a low voice, nudging the warrior woman with her elbow. "Let 'em plan. There's no rush - we get paid by the day." A little louder, she added to the group: "So far we have this warrior lady, Mr. firepower with his golems, and me and Velma. Unless you're expecting anyone else? That's not a lot of people, but I expect we can deal with some low-level thugs with no problem."

Kae'gaza sighed. Greedy people.

"Regardless, I believe planning is complete, is it not? I will provide a "tribute piece" and scout the base, then you will escort my "protection money" to the base, then attack. Is there consensus?"

((Note:

1. Apparently, foci do NOT count as bombs or mana batteries, they just serve as point boosters of your own powers. This means that Kae'gaza will not be chucking foci about willy-nilly, as they're probably not that useful if he runs out. Think of them as disposable RPGs, you have to pull the trigger, but then they make a big explosion.

2. Actually, not sure about the golem hacking thing anymore. Thalar says that the Drowtales World consists of comparatively fewer golems then there seems to be and that each and everyone is really difficult to mess with. I'm going to keep asking though, see if I can find something I can play within. Also because golems are really cool. ))
