Dwarf for Sale in Chel ((Open))

Durin chuckled grimly at his fellow dwarf's words as he finished removing their shackles, responding briefly in the same tongue so that their follower would not understand. "He is annoying, but annoying youths in fine clothes tend to have connections it's not wise to anger lightly. Besides, the fool probably thought the term a compliment. Acknowledging that we were here first. What I'm more worried about is whether he might be keeping an eye on us for those slavers."

Durin gave the cloaked boy a suspicious look, reaching under his jacket breifly before pressing something into the hands of each dwarf and whispering a few words. Bergthalsson wasn't pointing it at anything right now, but he was obviously wary. He paused, ducked into a side alley, and indicated that the other two dwarves move around to cut off Napheto's escape, cornering him until they could get some answers. At that, Durin levelled a curious object at the youth- what would look to the boy like a holowed out hand-crossbow stock with no bow or quarrel. A low word in Dwarvish signalled the two other dvergar to raise an identical weapon of their own; Durin had temporarily given them each one of his springbows in order to trap the drow.

"And what business is it of yours, blackskin whelp? If you are tailing me for the auctioneers, I will shoot you where you stand, connections or not. I may be a merchant but I'm more than dwarf enough to do you in and make it look like an accident. If you are not tailing us for the auctioneers, you'd better start explaining fast, or you might find that my patience for faespawn has run out for the day regardless. And before you try any funny business, know you cannot possibly kill more than one of us before you die with a bolt through you."

The dvergars surrounded Napheto and he stopped walking to let them take their positions around him. They leveled their weapons at him and tried their best to appear threatening. Despite being clearly outnumbered and in danger, Napheto kept smiling in his special way (in an almost unsettling way.. was this boy broken in the head?).

"And what business is it of yours, blackskin whelp? If you are tailing me for the auctioneers....."

The boy scoffed and lowered his hood. He trained his eyes directly into Durin's gaze without blinking.

He spoke slowly, "You paranoid rock-biter; I could not care less about what those poor, struggling slave traders have to do with you and your slaves. You really want to threaten a child, be my guest. Go on and show the world how tough you are by killing me. All you will accomplish is reenforcing the fact that no one trusts you. I do not even care if you get away with it and live the rest of your life in peace and tranquility," He guffawed at this, "Trash will act as trash does... are you trash, or are you a merchant that has his reputation to maintain?"

Napheto then turned his head (without moving any other part of his body, ensuring the Dwarves would not jump ahead to shooting him down fearfully) and locked his eyes on Rugo's.

"What do you think, Rugo? Will this tradesman soil his hands with my blood? Will you cast off your integrity to show me what I had suspected all along; that you are nothing but a murderer and an opportunist?"

*Rugo weighed the weapon in his hand. He was not sure he liked these ranged bolt-throwers, always having preferred the heavy battleaxes of his ancestors. Yet, in this situation any weapon was a blessing.
He met the boy's gaze with the scowl he had been wearing most of that day. He took a moment to put the words together in the Drow tongue.*

"I am not murderer, not opportunist. I am warrior trapped in enemy-land. I have been slave by your people in four years and you have not proven you self anything not an enemy. What you want I know not. But it if you want to live best be good."

"Our people have learned the hard way to expect nothing but treachery from yours, whelp. Making sure those drow I cheated aren't using you to help them stick a knife in my back and recapture my brothers is survival instinct, not paranoia."

The merchant just snorted derisively at the kid's attempt to appeal to his honor. "Honor is between people, whelp. You black devils aren't people until proven otherwise. If I kill you and walk away it's with the same satisfaction as having killed the offspring of a dangerous predator that menaced my family. My people will honor me and the drow trusted no one to begin with."

"Our integrity as dwarves calls for oceans of Drow blood spilt without remorse. You are young, but that alone does not make you any less one of the black devils who slaughtered and enslaved our kin in the hundreds of thousands and drove our people into the rocks and deep places. The atrocities of your race are blood on the hands of every newborn and every woman and every man until the day you are black devils no more. Your people have destroyed and enslaved us without an ounce of remorse or qualms, simply to slake their own ego and lust for dominance, and you dare speak to me about integrity? Be grateful we are even offering you a chance."

""I am not murderer, not opportunist. I am warrior trapped in enemy-land...."

The boy's ear twitched at the sound of, 'You have not proven yourself to not be and enemy'. "Your senses are dull if you see me as your enemy."

Then Durin gave his dissertation on integrity and the reasons to kill children in cold blood (at least this is how it sounded to Napheto). "Maybe my people 'took' your land, but they had lost their land to an other force. If you really thought you were worse off for it you would not live among us. For all the pride you place in your integrity you must have a shallow heart when it comes to Ada and Gold."

Napheto took a deep breath and smiled once more. This time his smile was dis-alarming and pleasant. "You may not think that we are people and my kin may not see you as people, but I... I know in my heart the truth that you and everyone in this hell-hole chose to ignore; We are all people. We all think and feel and hate and love and fight and beg and die for our meager lives spent endlessly in the dark and foreboding caverns."

"I just find your culture to be interesting. When I read about the Dvergar of the old days and how they were honorable and adamant I thought to myself, 'here is a people that would lay their lives on the line to prove a point. Here are people whom know how to live a life of honor,'" the boy frowned at this, "Well.. Today I was proven wrong. This is not how an honorable person deals with his problems. This is how a coward threatens a curious child. Yes you gave me a chance, and it was chance that let me see your people's true colours."

Napheto then took a step between Rugo and Durin to leave the center of this circle of hatred and distrust. "You talk as if you are being treated unwell, but what have you done to change it? I will tell you this much for your own good; Hatred does not change anything."

He lifted his hood once more and took another step away from the Dwarves.

"He insulted us, did he not? I did not understand all of it, but it surely did sound insulting."

*With a sigh, his scowl lifted and he lowered the crossbow.*

"But I say we let this pup go. I just want to be outside this city as soon as possible."

Carving her way through the crowd, accompanied by her hired escort, Suru'sunduiri Sariya'ssin'suurul Illhar'dro picked her way through the grummy crowd of overseers, butchers, and clansmen haggling over slaves. She cast apprehensive eyes over the selections, most of them were very worse to wear. Stopping in front of a cage of chained Halmes, she slipped a delicate dark finger under the chin of one downcast looking girl and lifted her gaze to meet hers. Fevered eyes, scraggly hair, clammy skin...

"I do hate dropping by the slave market...but we are need of some new ones. The selection is poor right now."

She let the girls head drop and wiped her hands on a silk handkerchief, she spoke to her silent escort,

"Maybe some dvergar children? We can raise them to be gnomes and jesters."

Suru looked boredly around her surroundings, her notice caught near the scuffle near the stage. Rogue dwarves, Suru mused to herself, already bought off already. She turned her notice to the other dvergar that were to be sold, her gaze landing on a pair of dwarves. Children, short, bright eyed. Not in bad condition at all, not at all...they were soon to be at the auctioneers block.

Napheto stormed down the street, lost in his thoughts. His mind raced on with assumptions and questions about his views on the Dverger people. His thoughts played out, "A bunch of assholes... there is absolutely no trust in this society. Not even enough trust to give a casual hello to anyone who's skin is not the same as my own... Even my guardian would have killed those rock-biters for being so brash.."

The boy's emotions were getting the best of him and as he continued on his way, brooding and hurt by his misfortune his aura began to darken until he was walking within his own shadow. The cold, slithering tendrils of darkness enveloped him slowly taking away his features. His eyes glowed with a sombre light behind the mask of shadow that was overtaking his face.

It was in this way that he was not paying attention to his surroundings at all; locked in his mind, and so it went that his face suddenly met with an unmoving obstacle. That obstacle was the lady Suru'sundruiri. Being of small stature, Napheto fell back on his behind and the shadows that his mana had produced dissolved away while he was coming back to reality.

He couldn't think of much to say so he looked up and started to talk but all that he could put together was, "Wh-wha--?"

Just as she was going to make her way to the wealthier section of slave auction, a separate area away from the grime of the common folk, a mass of shadows ran into Suru. The shadows drifted away, revealing a very young and disoriented young Beldrobbaen male. Her guard lifted up his sword threatingly, but Suru lifted up a hand to block him. A sweet smile played on her face as she bent down and offered a hand to the male.

"My, my, I seem to be running into all sorts of Beldrobbaen today. Or...running into me."

After helping the young boy up, Suru eyed him carefully,

"So young. My dear Val, what brings you to the slave market? Where is your escort?"

As the escort raised his weapon Napheto had a moment of "Oh... not again", but then Suru intervened. He returned her smile with his own charming expression of gratitude and she helped him to his feet.

"So young. My dear Val, what brings you to the slave market? Where is your escort?"

The boy brushed off his robe and began to disclose, "I ditched him in a restaurant and happened to find myself here. I watched some Dvergar get sold and was held as crossbow-point under suspicion of being a slave trader.. Dwarves can be very cruel."

Napheto took in a deep breath and lowered his head in a respectful bow, "I am very sorry for running into you." He looked back up to her and placed his open palm over his heart, "I am Napheto Beldrobbaen."

Hatred does not change anything.

The whelp had left by now, but his words resounded around Durin's head, frustrating him with their mix of promise and conceit. He viewed the encounter with a mix of disgust, pity, and sadness; the boy had seemed decent, even understanding to a degree, but still far too blinded by the arrogance of his race, and it had goaded him into venting anger he should not have. Hatred does not change anything? No, that was not true. Blind hatred changed nothing for the better. Properly controlled hatred- now that could change the world.

This was the lesson Durin had learned in the hardest way possible. The boy presumed to lecutre and claim moral high ground, but he had never been forced to watch helplessly as a capricious, alien race betrayed your every hope of peace and goodwill, slaughtered your brothers and sisters, your parents and friends, en masse or one by one. Had never been forced to watch his home was torn down around him and burnt, or as his loved ones were stolen from him and sold into slavery. He had never been forced to walk through a city where your very existence as a member of your species invited mistreatment, ambush, abuse and attempts at all manner of attack and enslavement. Where walking down the street was taking your life and your liberty into your hands, and where even survivng, much less prospering, was almost impossible. He had never been a member of a victimized and tenuous race, had never been forced to put aside personal grief and anguish and well-deserved vengeance in order to take the path that was best for the future of his species. He had never been treated as an inferior creature and a non-person simply because of his race.

No, for all his bold and haughty claims, the child did not know or understand the Dwarves. He only thought he did, in the fashion of the Drow, mistaking assumption, opinion, and first impression colored by racial arrogance and a society's willing ignorance for knowing. Durin hoped that perhaps one day Napheto would come to understand why, given the situation, there had been no moral or ethical choice but to accost the boy and ensure the safety of his companions; When the choice came down to pandering to a potential enemy's notions of honor or ensuring the safety of yourself and two of your people, there was only one valid decision. He hoped perhaps one day the boy would realize that if they had met under different circumstances, and most likely in a different locale, things would have been quite different.

Meanwhile, he sighed with relief as he and his two new companions finally left the market, the walled tower of the Nal'sarkoth enclave looming in their sight. Once they made it in, they would be safe...

*Walking along the road out of the market and towards their safe haven, Rugo shot a glance at Durin.*

"So, brother. Now that you are our new... master..."

*THe word master was said with a snort of laughter*

"...What are your plans with us?"

Durin chuckled. "You're free dwarves both. I make no claims to mastery over either of you save perhaps the area of artificer's work. However, I do aim to get us all to the free city of Raveran, where one can feel reasonably safe walking down the streets. From there you will be free to go where you will, though I'm always looking for good dwarves, in my workshop and for... other ventures. I'd be honored if you saw fit to enjoy my hospitality while you get back on your feet."

Though Durin would never mention it or hold it over them, though, there was the matter of their debt to him- debts of honor, gratitude, and the money that had gone to their freedom price. Bergthalsson was confident that they were dwarf enough to try and make some form of reparations on their own intiative; only drow needed to be coerced into giving their due.

"You will find that while I am known to the drow as a skilled jeweller, and indeed that shop earns me most of my funds, I am not the bearded gnome I let them believe me to be. My gold and my ada work to the betterment of our people in any way I can stretch it, whenever the opportunity arises. There are plans and projects I have in mind, grand plans to rebuild and forge new paths and new havens for the Dvergar. Someday, I would be honored to tell you of these plans, and hear your thoughts on them."

"And in the meanwhile... Well, once we get to Raveran, I do believe I did promise to look into the fate of Balmalung, and to help you reclaim it if it can be located."

At the very moment Napheto gave his introduction a shout rose over the the noise from the surrounding people. "There you are, young Val!"

The boy turned to see his guardian, Tulsa'eed weaving through the crowd toward him. Napheto did not want to be taken back just yet. He knew once he returned to the stronghold he would not be able to leave again for quite some time, as all of his time would be spent listening to Nu'al scold him for putting himself in danger. He had to break away.

Napheto turned back to Suru'sunduiri, "I am very sorry milady but I must be off," he began while taking a spidersilk cloth from within his robe and tying it around the Beldrobbaen crest on his arm concealing it, "Perhaps we will meet once again".

Napheto took off like a bolt of lightening, and as he vanished into the distance he became obscured once more by shadows (though this time the shadows were not as thick and heavy as they had been during his brooding earlier). The young boy was completely lost from view in ten or twenty seconds.

Tulsa'eed then rushed past Suru and her escort calling after Napheto, "W-wait! I can't return home without you!"

The fire flickered in the darkness and lit the stone around them. The dwarves had made camp and laid themselves to sleep, wanting to continue to Raveran when they were rested. Rugo had had no sense for daily cycles for quite some time, but he guessed that it must be nearing midnight on the surface. He sat watch over his companions while they slept. This gave him time to think.
Durin wished to help him recover Balmalung from the warriors who captured him, and this was a noble intent indeed. But four years had passed since that battle. He had seen them take the ancient axe apart with his own eyes, and heap it with the other weapons and the garbage from the warcamp, as if it were common scrap.
His mind burned with imaginings of the inglorious fate his beloved ancestral weapon could have come to. Most likely smelted to be made into a simple sword, or a breatplate; then, thought Rugo, it would at least see battle still.
But the Drow had no eye for the fine craftmanship of the dwarves! They might have mistaken the aged metal for mere steel, at made it into forks, or nails, or worse!
Whichever the case, fabled Balmalung was lost, and his honour had been lost with it. In order to ever be able to return to his town, Rugo had to repay his debt to Durin, his liberator, but firstmost repay a far more terrible debt to the wretched elves, who had enslaved him and humiliated him.
He was holding the crossbow Durin had given him and Hadro. Still not his first choice in weapons, it was a suitable means of defense for what he was planning. He made thoroughly sure that the two others were fast asleep, then set out upon the road, walking in the direction he had been coming from.
Filtering through the darkness of the caverns, towards the hated city of Chel'el'Sussoloth.
On the ground by where Durin was sleeping, he had left a note. A piece of cloth, written in dwarvish runes with soot from the fire.

I am sorry, please do not think me ungrateful.
There things that need be done. My honour demands it.
Do not follow me. I will meet you in Raveran.
My debt will be settled.
-Rugo
