Val'Raveran to Phoenix Eye (Under Obsidian Skies)

What a day. Not unlike the rest of his miserable life, Adrius recalled-- poverty and famine, then slavery, then a series of nasty accidents, then poverty again. A burly Dvergar pointing a strange weapon at him is almost typical.

The Halme closed his eyes a moment, before half-opening them and giving Durin the smallest of nods. ".. alright. I'm not a spy but... Fine. I don't have anything here in Val'Raveran anyway. Where's this caravan going..?"

The chemist's question was only half-hearted, asked as he turned to start for the gathering from out of the alleyway. He doesn't really meet eyes with anyone-- and is careful to not look at Malyuta. Scary man.

Isabella hefted her pack up and slipped it into a wagon as the others went around packing bags, checking horses, and hunting down beggers. Wandering around the wagons, Isabella searched out others that might need a hand.

Durin strides confidently back into the midst of the Caravan with Adrius firmly in front of the barrel of his springbow. Calling out to one and all, he gathers their attention with a humorous yell. "Why, look here everybody! See what I've caught. It seems we have a halme who's so kindly volunteered to come with us to prove she's no spy."

Murados stood near the caravan and watched as his employer returned, arching a scraggy brow curiously at what he’d brought back. A slim, effeminate halme, clad in rags and walking stiffly - probable cause? The springbow that Durin had at the lads back. He didn’t quite know what to make of the boy-man, but he did know that the more people in the caravan, the harder his job became. And besides that, he hadn’t yet profiled his fellow travelers; if there was someone in the caravan who was liable to crack under pressure, he’d like to know now, rather than find out when the moment came calling. Though their caravan was mostly non-drow, that didn’t mean they wouldn’t be preyed upon by Duergar raiders: though some clans left their trading kinsmen alone, others saw no distinction, and attacked any who wandered unwittingly into their ambush. He didn’t fancy the idea of this column going up against the Doombreaker’s; they would be mincemeat. Though, his former clan had probably headed south, towards the tunnels around Chel’ssquigglyname. That didn’t mean there weren’t other things out there though. Sighing, he shook his head, and went back to cleaning and oiling his crossbow; it was a deceptive weapon, it was. Small, compact, but it packed enough punch to send a poisoned or delayed-explosive bolt through up to an inch of armor. And the loading mechanism, a cunning little doozy he’d come up with himself after a night of boozing, let him load whole clips of up to 10 bolts at a time. He winched back the gears till he heard the reassuring 'snikt' of the wire passing the catch, then racked back the mechanism.

He looked over at the duo once more, before chuckling darkly under his breath in a strike of odd humor "Don't think it's a she, Ser. No package" He gestured towards the halmes noticeable lack of cleavage, a wry grin tugging at his craggy features. It felt wierd to smile. It wasn't something he did very often.

"Really now?" Durin blinked in surprise, looking over Adrius more closely before letting out a guffaw. "Well, isn't that something. Good eye, Doombreaker. I've known more than a few who'd pay good money to spend a night with one like that. "

Noting the halme's horrified expression, he laughed again. "Don't worry, there wouldn't be much sense in that where we're going, and it's not my trade anyways. Unless you have no other talents or skills to contribute?"

Not really waiting for an answer, he herded Adrius into one of the smaller, empty wagons, then closed and barred the door. The stout mushroom-stalk construction would serve well enough as a holding cell for one skinny halme ...boy.

"Well, that's dealt with." Dusting his hands off, he holstered the springbow and strode over to Murados, returning the dwarf's wry grin with pleasant surprise. If the Doombreaker had cracks in his stony exterior, it just might make putting up with him for his skills that much easier.

Isabella looked over at the small commotion and was rather surprised at Durin herding the Halme inside. "You sure you want to bring him along? We'll have enough trouble without having to look after one naughty Halme. Best to just give her a kick to the butt and dump her back where you found her."

As Malyuta was seeing about what everyone was stirring, he peered up from the ground. He had heard the cries of the lady dwarf, and as he gazed around the scene, he was greeted by a familiar face.

"Hey!" The crippled thief shouted. "That's the bitch who tried to mug me!" as he pointed to the apparition-like... man? It was impossible to tell.

Malyuta rose from the ground and approached the androgynous human-esque creature. "What the hell is your problem? I thought I told you not to follow me."

The crippled man began running his hands along the knife next to his leg. His rage was growing but then the fire in his gut was doused when he heard the soft-hearted voice of their intrepid "leader."

"Now, now, Malyuta, Isabella, There's no need ta fly off the handle! Jus' because this young man may look like one a' them gray Drow, don't mean he acts like one! I'm sure before we let him join our expedition, we can let 'im explain himself! Now, young man, are you a man? What's your name? Why'd ya come here? And most importantly, can ya contribute anything ta our journey?"

Poor Adrius. Caught, captured, and herded into a wagon, being stared at and thrown questions all the while. The Halme can barely get out an answer to Durin before being locked in the wagon, but what DOES come out is quick and simple. "Er-- Addie-- I'm an accredited alchemist and apothecary--" and then the wagon door shuts in his face.

It'd be a wonder if anyone actually believed it, truth though it is.

He begins regretting ever following the cripple.

It had been a long long time since Eronas had heard anything good about the state of his race. The Drow had long ago driven his people deep into the other parts of the underworld, or enslaved them, either physically or mentally, indoctrinating the few duergar who lived free but didn't fight the dark skinned, pointy eared, freaks. He understood how bloody powerful they were, but he couldn't understand why his forebears hadn't all decided to die or continue fighting... well, he hadn't until a few years back. Then it had all been blindingly clear. There wasn't really a way to win, not truly, they had been here too long, the duergar had lost too much. It would take centuries or more to regain ground, and the process would never really start if those who were truly free of the Drow never made a home. He'd been kicked out of his clan for suggesting that it settle down, try to restart their civilization. Since then, the lesson that there was no real victory, only a constant litany of Pyrrhic victories for his people against the dark skinned elves, for the past 4 years he'd made his living as a guide and prospector for whoever would pay, elf, duergar, human, drider, whatever. As long as they paid.

He was one of the best guides, his very skin declared it. A deep deep dark grey with a network of pink lines like veins of rose quartz in black stone coursed over his skin. Only dwarves born in the very deepest parts of the Underworld had skin tones THAT exotic. Duergar who couldn't navigate and prospect in the deep underworld ended up dieing, it was far too easy to get lost without those skills, far too easy to tumble down some deep cavern in the dark. So he made enough money to get him by, to buy the tools of his trade, mining charges and such, from the few Duergar who passed within the drow cities who could make such devices and compounds, and he'd simply existed, just moving from one day to the next.

Then, only last night, a rumor reached his ears. An expedition to do just what he'd been kicked out of his clan for suggesting... he honestly hadn't believed it... but some part of him he'd thought long ago dead and buried stirred, demanding that he investigate. And so here he was, at the gate, where there was obviously some kind of expedition planned. Looking around, obviously here for the expedition, given his pack, his ball-bearing lain "sappers armor" (something any duergar would recognize), and his pick-axe hanging from his belt, he wandered amongst the wagons and carts, seeking out someone to tell him what exactly was going on, and if there was room for one more.

Isabella's ears perk at this and she sidles over to the door once Durin had sauntered off. "Hey there. I overhead that you have some skills with being an alchemist and apothecary? The name is Isabella, and I'd have some skill at healing and being an apothery as well. Sorry to get off on the wrong foot, but we can be a suspicous bunch."

Eronas found he would recieve a very different reception than the Halme, as Durin spotted the deep dwarf and approached him, waving.

"Ho there, friend! Who might you be, and what brings you here? Have you come to join us?"

Hadro Stonemail slowly rolled out of his sleeping bag and rubbed the grit from his eyes, muttering darkly as he rose to his feet. The journey to Machike had taken longer than he thought what with all the problems he had run into. I mean, who in the world could have predicted that he’d run into Dempsey at that little village? The old scalawag just had to drag Hadro out for a cup of ale which turned into five which turned into twelve which turned into twenty, that was way too much for even a Dwarf so it was no wonder Hadro passed out. When he finally awoke with a throbbing headache the late hours of the next day it was to find that he had been robbed down to the shirt on his back. It had taken him six days to recover all his product, but no matter now he was home.

Hadro packed up his sleeping bag and began walking, Ravern was just right over the hill. Time to go home, time to have a tall mug of, well not ale maybe mead, and a hot bowl of broth and crawl into bed to sleep for a month. Hallo, what’s this? Hadro stood on the hill and looked down uncertainly at the group gathered in front of the gate. Even from that distance Hadro could see that they were a motley crew, he immediately eliminated the possibility of a mercenary band as he approached. He could only see armor gleaming on a few of them, Hadro’s curiosity was piped.

“Hail friends!” Hadro called as soon as he was within shouting distance. “Hail friends!” At this close Hadro saw that many of the group carried traveling packs similar to his while others had wagons. It was some type of caravan then, but one of the weirdest caravans he had ever seen. Hadro saw to his delight that the majority of the people were Dwarves. “Which clan? Where is this caravan bound?” He added in Dverger, addressing no one in particular.

Murados looked up to the newcomer, before shrugging resignedly "To tha' phoenix eye, lad. Wherever that may be." He jerked a thumb at the head of the expedition, Durin "That's tha' one ye'll be wanting te talk to." He leant back against the wagon train, resting his head against the wooden surface as he closed his eyes, shouldering his crossbow across his chest and winching back the mechanism. His eyes were lidded, but remained open, looking about the little scene intently as he watched for any signs of trouble.
