With a scowl on his face and ale on his lip, Malyuta lifted himself from his chair and remembered his promise to the eager, young dwarf. He wiped his lip with his sleeve as he thought of a life with the dwarves. As badly as he wanted, he couldn't return to the surface. He was most likely still a wanted man. Sure, he could pick some a few saps' pockets and stay in Val'Raveran, but they would be sure to catch him were he to actually consider this a long-term career. It wouldn't be a matter of "if." It would be a matter of "when." Even if he were able to round up every single dim-witted Drow in the city and make a transaction from their person, he would still only have enough to scrape by. And if the Sharen rejected him as a slave simply because he was a cripple, then how would he ever find work in this city?

Perhaps living with these stout creatures wouldn't be so bad. He would be pursuing a trade in which he was skilled: hunting. For Malyuta often had to scavenge for his own food and live off the land while he was on the run from those angry village hordes. How ironic that the hunter was also the hunted. Malyuta, still with a doubt or two, resolved to join the upstart dwarf and help get food for them. They could give him shelter and protection. If he didn't like it, he could make off with all the booze he could carry and at least die happy.

Malyuta strode up to Torgall. "Okay, you win. I, Malyuta Skuratov will happily throw himself underneath a falling boulder to feed your doomed entourage. Sure, we'll all die. But at least now we'll die a little slower," he intoned.

Torgall could barely contain his excitement as he realized he had convinced this seeming cynic. "Brilliant, lad!" He said as he took Malyuta's hand in his and shook it excitedly. "Just yew wait and see! We'll provide ye with the finest care us dwarves can muster! We'll make sure ye don't have to stress or strain or push yerself to the br-"

"LET ME MAKE SOMETHING CLEAR TO YOU, DWARF. I DON'T NEED ANY OF YOUR GODDAMN CHARITY. I'M PROVIDING YOU A SERVICE, AND IN TURN, YOU ARE PROVIDING ME WITH ANOTHER SERVICE. I'M CERTAINLY NOT LOOKING FOR ANY HANDOUTS."

Malyuta's eyes were bulging as his scowl had transformed into a snarl. He looked past the dwarf as Torgall said, "Me an' my compassionate ways," as he shook his head. He snapped out of self-pity for a moment to finally announce...

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THA PHOENIX EYE EXPEDITION! WITH YOUR HELP, AND THE HELP OF THIS BENEVOLENT DWARF, WE SHALL PURCHASE OUR SUPPLIES TOMORRA AND RIDE OUT TO THE EYE! LET ALL LOOK UPON THIS DAY AND REMEMBER IT AS THE DAY THE GREATEST HOPE FOR ALL DVERGAR KIND WAS FORGED!"

Past the cheering and shouts of joy, Torgall made his way over to the prestigious dwarf and said, "By the way, I never did get yer name."

Durin bowed grandly and proffered a hand to shake. "Durin Bergthallson, at your service and your clan's," he replied with a cheerful smile, using one of the longer, more formal traditional Dwarven greetings. "I'm an artificer in stone, gem, and metal. That's how I've managed to get where I am today; I make fine pretty trinkets, and the Drow climb all over each other to hand over their loot in exchange!" he chuckled, speaking entirely in Dwarven out of simple tact, considering the large number of drow about.

"A crafter of the Earth's bones is always useful. And if yer wares are as fine as you claim, I am sure we will have no problem attracting merchants to gather them up and bring us needed goods. One gnarled hand ran along his finely trimmed beard, thinking. "Normally I save my plants to be sold, or for my own use, but this is a grand cause, and I am happy to provide all that I have to it. Reaching under his chitin armor, into one of the many belt pouches concealed beneath the deep blue shell, Kel produced a small round tin. He neatly twisted the lid off and placed in on the table. Inside was a vivid orange paste that smelled of mold. "Ripple slime. One of the plants from my old home. It is useful to ease pain, and helps prevent the wound from festering. I have quite a few tins, and I have the spores to grow more if I get a suitable site to sow in. I also have more plump pods. They may taste like water, but they are filling and bursting with water. I have maybe a tendays worth of them between everyone here. Not that much, but they grow quickly and just about anywhere you throw them.

He had several other plants, but none of them really seemed useful for food outside of the blue cap, but that was only useful if they had a bakery up and running. "And let me see that list. Half the bastards selling "medicine" around here couldn't tell a death cap from the liberty bell if you pointed it out to them twice." He had some experience selling his goods with chemists and the like, and found few of them knew how to make good medicine out of the plants in the wild, always needing this or that, when something perfectly suitable was growing out of their moldy bread loaf from last month.

Malyuta decided to retreat to the bar with his thoughts, 'This whole plan is a suicide mission... especially for me... but I guess my options have run out. At least I still have two legs left...' He chuckled at his own joke and surveyed the tavern. It was abuzz with faces he was certain he was going to meet on the expedition. Some would back out, sure... "cowards" people would call them. But no, a coward is someone who does not take advantage of a situation even when the odds are in favor of them. A fool is someone who attempts to take unnecessary risks even when the odds are overwhelmingly against them. Currently, Malyuta was not feeling like a coward.

He saw the little people going about drinking in excitement for their grand quest. He saw the supposed "leader" standing on his crate and shouting instructions for those participating, "GATHER YER THINGS FER TONIGHT, SLEEP WELL, THEN TOMORRA, AT MIDDAY BY THE CITY GATES, WE MAKE OUR WAY TO THE EYE AND CREATE HISTORY!" "Yeah, sure. I'll be there. You can bet money on that," Malyuta said to himself. He sighed and looked around the tavern at all those happy faces. There was of course, the dwarf woman who had so loudly proclaimed herself as a healer. There was the tiny light elf girl who had done the same. They both would be quite pretty if they weren't covered in all the grime that was so typical of living life as a third-class citizen. He saw the rich dwarf getting acquainted with the volunteers, and he saw the dwarf covered in armor which looked like some kind of fungus. He saw the tired-looking dwarves suddenly looking more hopeful and aloof, spirits seeming heightened by this anomalous display of genuine and mutual kindness.

Malyuta hung his head and resolved to keep his word. He would accompany the little men and women and help them complete this "suicide mission" to the best of his ability, which for a cripple was surprisingly plentiful.

With a sigh, he grabbed his crutch, and exited through the tavern entrance. He passed the front desk of the inn and walked out the front door. He looked left, then right, then hobbled along the side of the building until he found what he was looking for.

With his crutch, he moved aside the pieces of trash and garbage until he could see the ground. He placed himself there and shifted the trash back onto his body and partially obscuring his face, he attempted to drift into sleep. Should be ample enough protection from any brigands, be they city guard or thief.

A night just like any other.

(OOC: READ THIS. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

This shall be a segment I like to call "Malyuta's Journal." I can understand the general frustration of newcomers having to read every single post in the thread to understand what's going on, so that's why Malyuta will recount what's going on in one convenient, easy to read post. If you're a newcomer, or you would just like to easily keep tabs on what's going on, look for and read these segments.)

Mother,

This will be the fifth time I've written to you. Or is it the fourth? I lost track. I hope you and father are well, and I hope all is good back in the city. I apologize for the delay, but you know how stressful your schedule can be when you're a crippled derelict roaming around in some alien city. Remember how you always used to say how I needed to branch out more and make new friends? I was too antisocial? Well, here's something some would possibly consider... good news. I just joined up with a bunch of pint-sized men and women to go establish a refuge for runaway slaves or something. And no, mother, they aren't children, they're dwarves. We're all going to be living together like some big happy storybook family. I guess I'll have plenty of time to make friends. Apparently, I'm not the only one who's been fed up with how upper management treats the little man. Yes, sorry mother. Forgive me. It's late, and I was trying to sleep on what I can only surmise is a box filled with feces and an object which I am hoping is something these creatures use to make balloon animals which they decided to fill with custard for some reason.

But about the slave refuge or whatever it is? Well, I met this one dwarf in a tavern. Eager little son of a bitch. He talked about how he planned to make a safe haven for people with shattered lives. Not just for his brethren, but for humans and elves and such. He was so goddamn excited, he didn't even have the appropriate tools, materials, or even manpower necessary to get his little project off the ground. It got even better when he mentioned the place was going to be at... wait for it... The Phoenix Eye! It's a giant lake of magma with demons and other things that evolved by rending and cleaving through people's buttocks. I told him he was a moron, and setting up camp there is suicide and what-have-you, but he wouldn't have any of it. He just kept going on and on, "But it's so spacious!"

Eventually, I stopped and told him if he even got one person to join up on his little pipe dream, I'd come with and lend my skillset to this expedition. Well, needless to say, I'm lending my skillset to this expedition. Yeah, I know, right? Some altruistic rich dwarf came by and offered to fund the whole thing. After that, everyone thought living next to a giant lake of fire was the greatest thing since not living next to a giant lake of fire. Now, normally I would have taken off, but there really is no other place I can go. I can't stay in this goddamn city. There are few places would hire a crippled human. This seems like my one option, so I'm sticking with it.

We really got all sorts coming along with us for the ride. We've got healers, hunters, smiths, craftsman, I think I even saw an elf. It's been great talking to you, mother, but I have to be up in a few hours. I'm meeting these dwarves by the city gate. This'll be the third time I've begun life anew. Wish me luck.

Love,
Malyuta.

Thanking everyone who had come to talk as the day and the discussion wound down, Durin took his leaeve of the White Lion, headed for his home-cum-workshop. There were plans to be made, supplies to be ordered, and contacts to get in touch with- Durin had it in mind to coax a few specialists he knew or had heard of into joining the operation. With his coordination skill and a bit of luck, everything and everyone he was after getting would show up at the Raveran gates the next morning...

Isabella wrote down the name and location of her current master and handed it to Durin before leaving for the night. Hopefully, he would be able to arrange her release with a minimum of hassle so she wouldn't get held up too long at the shop. Of course, she wouldn't hold her breath on the whole buisness.

Arriving back at the shop, Isabella entered the workshop that served as both home and workspace,. Picking up a note on the table, she read the tersely written work schedule that she would need to prepare before she turned in for the night. Sighing, Isabella braced herself for hopefully would be the last night at this apothery.

Like any other? Perhaps not. One Adrius Valir, recently freed slave of the Val'Nar'Sarkoth, former freed employee of the Val'Nar'Sarkoth, and current itinerant odd-jobsman in Val'Raveran has found himself walking down the alleys, looking for anything of value while munching on a piece of flat bread. Junked tools, jars, anything possibly useful. Being between jobs and having hardly any ada on him, the ghastly-white Halme is even thinner than normal, and to his unending irritation, his grey robe-- when belted with the green sash he was awarded upon being given his freedom-- hangs and puffs out in all the most awkward places. When he was grabbing supper a few moments prior, the vendor called him "miss!" But, it being a drowess, he wasn't too keen on correcting her to her face.

The moody, bleached chemist paused in the alley by the White Lion, leaning against the wall and finishing his meal in sight of a peculiarly-shaped mound of trash. Munch, munch.

Curiosity finally got the best of him. He finished the rest and walked over to the pile of garbage, extending a foot to nudge it. He didn't expect to find a person under there-- Malyuta.

".. Helloo?" Adrius called, curious. A crippled human with a crutch-- Surely a beggar of some sort. But he doesn't often see other humans, and beggars often Know Things. Possibly things like any local chemists who might be in need of an assistant.

The night held no respite for Kel.

The moment the group broke and went their seperate ways for the night, Kel had to start a long walk back to his fungus patch. His cart was there, which would make going much quicker, but coming back would take a bit longer. There was no need to rush though. His little nightsoil garden was maybe five miles out of the city, well enough away that no one would bother it, and that sometimes, animals would come by. He did not mind losing a few pods if he got fresh meat out of it.

The route took him along one of the trade trails, making the going very smooth. At least until he took a small crevice in the cavern wall, and could barely fit through in gear. His cart was hidden under a rock covered cloth, making it look like nothing more then a pile of crushed stones.

Within, the pungent odor of nightsoil wafted about. Used to the smell of ripe fungal beds, Kel didn't even mind. The harvest was a bit slim, most of the pods premature. Still, he packed everything worth taking into mushroom wood barrels and began loading them up into his cart. He packed a bit of nightsoil in the bottom of each, to keep the pods fresh. If anyone complained, he would just not give them any.

He picked his entire garden clean, taking along the patches of freshly laid spores. He wasn't going to give up his special plants to any lazy bastard who happens to stumble upon this.

The trip back took much longer, laden down with the cart full of barrels. Still, he managed to get back to the city with a few hours left, and dozed on beside his barrel in his armor. He cradle his spear to his chest as he slept.

Despite the promise of compensation and the good turnup of followers to the expidition, Karken had remained doubtful and never approached the group. Even though his life here was worthless, it was safe, at least safer than the Phoenix Eye. That had been slightly more than twelve hours ago.

Six hours ago Karken was bruised and beaten, his stand burned and his work smashed. Seemed the gang had decided to make an example of him. The reasons why he had been targeted were for him unknown, and had he known them he would not have understood them. It did not matter. By now the prospect of going to the Phoenix eye was not so alien no more.

Having dug through the pile of what remained of his possessions he managed to find some of his stuff, but not much. He hoped that rich dwarf had bought equipment as said to the expidition. With that he showed up, still somewhat limping after the beating, at the gates the same day.

Neraph, upon hearing that the group was indeed departing- and this time with a more intent focus than simply struggling to earn that extra bit of ada, or to save that spare piece of bread someone forgot about. Leaving the building without a word, he had swiftly marched home through the city streets. So surrounded by Drow, Humans, and others besides he could not help but feel a swell of pride at the new home they were carving out. This would not be some ancient series of ruins, inhabited by squatters! This would be a new city, an example of Dvergar ingenuity! As he returned to his cramped shanty, he could not help but feel his chest swell. This was a new home! A new start! He had practically thrown open the door to his home, the rotting wood of the four-walled shed threatening to give way. As it stood, one of the rusted hinges broke, iron snapping like a twig as the entire door buried itself into the ground with a certain level of finality.

But all of that meant nothing- grabbing the sturdy-handled pickaxe and hatchet being used as improvised table legs, he let the whole thing clatter to the ground. His next act was to dig up the ada buried underneath the hammock he slept in, almost ripping the thing down in his haste. Broken, yellowing fingernails churned up soft dirt, until the first glint of coin could be seen- and then the next glint. More glinting took place as he eventually dug up the tiny pile of coins, stuffing them all into his pockets with a brief jangle. Giving a yellowing smile, he began to methodically scour the room, taking the candlejack and candle stub, rolling the hammock into an easily-transportable bundle, and ensuring that naught was left but the rats and dirt he had slept amongst for so long. When his task was finally complete, he departed for the city gates with his heart soaring and his mind aflame. He had everything he would need for this new life- all that was left was to simply begin the trip, and hope that none would interfere with the city's construction.

Isabella's eyes cracked open at the usual time and she grunted as she sat up and rolled out of her nest of blankets. Looking about, she saw that the workshop was the same as always in the early morning: light filtering through a crack in the shutters, and all the various bottles, roots, plants, and whatnot adorning the shelves. Walking up to the spot where the day's worklist was usually placed, Isabella noticed a different piece of paper.

Snatching it up, Isabella read the words written in the ever=terse style of her 'employer' she was notified that her contract had been purchased and that she was released from service starting the momment she work up, and was to leave the store promptly.

Clutching the paper to her, and dancing a little jig, Isabella scurried back to her cubby and gathered up all of her meger possesions that she could stuff into her backpack and bags. Heaving them over her shoulders, Isabella shuffled to the door and opened it, letting the sun inside. Blinking in the light, Isabella hurried out the door towards the main gate where the rest of her kin hopefully waited.

Malyuta started awake as he slowly opened his eyes then blinked a few times to only see a gaunt, pale-skinned, and pale-haired... woman? He couldn't tell. In his groggy state, he mistook the creature for a Drowussu, possibly some sort of guard, but then it dawned on him as he gazed upon the thing's clothes, that it was not some official state authority, but a scrounger; possibly a thief. Adrenaline pumped through his body as he began to quickly think of a ploy to evade this potential mugger.

Malyuta grabbed his crutch and used it to hoist himself on his foot, his gaze still fixed upon the thing. He feigned an expression of fear and put on an air of sympathy and compassion in his voice."Now, now, don't do anything rash... I got what you want, and I'll gladly give it to you..."

His cloak obscured the movements of his hands. He carefully slid his fingers down his leg.

"You just... stay there and look pretty, and I'll hand over anything you want."

In a flash, Malyuta retrieved his knife from its improvised sheath and placed it against the boy's (?) neck.

"If you so much as blink, I'll make sure you don't see the light of day." He growled in undertone. 'The light of day... light of da-SHIT! I NEED TO GET TO THAT DWARF'S BULLSHIT!' In that instant, Malyuta's thoughts were an amalgam of chaotic fragments. He retracted his piece of iron, frantically grabbing a hold of his crutch and his makeshift backpack. "Pleasure meeting you, young lady." Malyuta pointed at the thing, "Don't follow me." Like that, Malyuta was off, his crutch clacking on the road as he set off to the city gates.
