The Surface: D'ulkunde (private)

"This place is cursed."

The drowess visibly shivered at her own petrified image, the stone eyes seemingly piercing her own. “We should leave….this room at least.” She tapped the commander’s shoulder, as if reassuring herself the male had heard her. The room seemed to close in on them now, and the ringing in her ears was beginning to sound more like laughter. Feeling suffocated she left the crowded room, passing Durlyn in the study. Hindrvitni nudged the metal door open to let some air in, breathing a sigh of momentary relief.

She rested her forehead against the slimy metal. “He’s right. This place was long forsaken by the goddesses.”

---

The Tallau’wa replica remained stoic, no cut marred its carved form as it did the flesh of the living original. Even so, with the way the mana light hit the statue just then it seemed to smile; as if mocking the vain attempts of the raiders to make some sense of the situation.

He’s right. This place was long forsaken by the goddesses. Hearing those words said, Trinita never wanted to be so wrong in his life.

Looking at Tallau'wa's hand were she cut herself. He also wanted to see if that how the statues worked that way. It might be some kind of Mana copying device but Trinita would never claimed to be an expert. Nothing happened to the statue and the way it looked in the light it was smiling. Mocking them.

He nudged Tallau'wa "Come on, there's nothing here." He wanted out.

Leaving the room, Trinita kept looking over his shoulder. Looking at those headless statues that seem to reach out to him, asking for help or to drag him to hell. When he was in the other room with the book Trinita turned back to Tallau'wa "Tallau'wa Lets get that hand covered. I don't want to risk an infection growing in this place."

Trinita caught the look on Durlyn face, it was one of pure angry. He hopped he was doing alright.

Seeing the lack of a result on her replica's hand, Tallau'wa was relieved... until she saw the strange smile on its face. She shuddered in revulsion, then followed Trinita out.

"Tallau'wa, let's get that hand covered. I don't want to risk an infection growing in this place." She nodded absentmindedly and said, "Go ahead." Her mind was still on what may have occurred here, and why the statues were there. She wondered why anyone would have made such things. Perhaps they were... amusements? Interesting distractions for visitors to the city? She shuddered again. Whoever might have liked that sort of thing, they were almost certainly dead now.

"I don't believe in curses, but I do believe in assholes with sick senses of humor and way too much free time on their hands" Durlyn growled as he followed his squad out the door, looking back briefly to check out the statues at long last...And wishing he hadn't.

"Yep, thats gonna stay with me for a few moons, damnit" he snarled as he continued onward, wondering what sort of sicko created such statues and if he/she were one of the original inhabitants from long ago or someone new who moved in long after the disaster that befell this place.

"So are we returning to base then Sir?"

Vithar stepped away from the statues whilst facing them, only briefly looking back as he exited the room with the other Highland Raiders. How long he and the others had stood in dizzy cogitation, he didn't know. It was only in the mad dreams of one afflicted by drugs or delirium in which Vithar thought such things were possible. Vithar nodded sagely at Hindrvitni's words. He sensed something unspeakably vile about these statues, and was glad to put the perverse constructs out of his sight.

Seeing that they had all left the room, Vithar closed the door securely shut behind them and searched for a means to lock or bar the door. He couldn't have been the only one glad to be rid of such loathsome obscenities. "Gods know what cosmic foulness lurks within these nighted halls. Regardless, we can't abandon our mission just because of some statues," said the Raider somberly. Vithar shook his head as if to remove the memory of the disturbing sight from his mind. "Let's get going to see what else is here...and let's double time it. I don't want to stay in this fragment of Hell longer than I have to."

The hinges on the doors were silent, no mute as Trinita closed the door to the statue room. He cant remember when he let superstition get into his head or in the way of his work but Trinita feared the Nals unsettled some angry spirits.

Putting as much space between him and statues, Trinita left immediately to the hall way and didn't looked back. Caution hasn't left Trinita as he poked his head out and looked both ways before leaving for the hall. The painting and carvings on the wall have taken to a whole new level terror.

The halls were almost as they were as they were when they entered the room. "Which way do we go next Commander." He managed to say steadily to Vithar.

Hindrvitni nodded as Trinita passed her and exited back into the horrid hallway. She took a momentary glance back at the door of the doll room before following suit. "I want to go home, damnit."

Almost instinctively her eyes followed the hallway floor to where the stairs would have been. The coast was clear of course. She paused. "Well that's not right......" Her head craned to look behind at the other end of the hall too. The coast was clear. Everything was in its place, but the floor seemed to be lacking....something.

"Guys?.....wasn't......wasn't there a body here earlier?"

Durlyn looked to where the alledged body was supposed to have been before, confirmed it had vanished and looked around for signs of someone having dragged it away, eyed and ears alert for any signs of a threat.

"Oh bloody wonderful, first look alike golem doppelgangers, and now mysterious disappearing corpses. All we need now is freakin Kharla'ggen to make her appearance and we'll have ourselves one fantastic haunted house to scare the kiddies this Hallows Eve" Durlyn growled sarcastically, wondering who the hell was dumb and/or cocky enough to play mind games with a troop of fully armed Highland Raiders in the middle of an abandoned ruin.

Vithar swore blackly as he noticed the missing corpse. "That Stalker was deader than the Nidraa'chal clan a few minutes ago. Into what madhouse have we strayed?" The veteran Raider quickly looked around their current location, sword in hand. His patience for such tricks was just about exhausted.

"Where could it have gone? Perhaps it was a flesh golem set to remain inactive until activated by a certain mana signal," Vithar muttered, desperately trying to make rational sense of the weird happenings before them. "It has to be a bullshit psyche job. Two or three drow out there, maximum."

Tallau'wa looked around. "There was a body here," she said. "Where could it have gone...? Maybe someone dragged it away."

At Durlyn's mention of Kharla'ggen, Tallau'wa muttered just loud enough for everyone to hear, "After this, I might not be surprised if she shows up somewhere in here looking at us through that mask of hers."

When Vithar mentioned his hypothesis, Tallau'wa appeared to consider it and find it likely. "If that happened, then there might be more such golems... or golems of a type that we haven't seen yet." She subconsciously pulled her bow a little tighter, raised it a little higher. "Yet another reason to be on high alert in this goddessforsaken hellhole."

"I haven't seen many golems. The few that I have seen are... messy, Covered with stitches and very doll like in appearance and movement." Trinita looked back at the others. If it was ture that it was a golem he failed them, he should have stripped that Nal down and he might have seen all the marking of a golem.

But it was just as likely somebody or a team picked up that body moved silently off with it. It was an incredible feet of strength and skill. Thinking about that it didn't make Trinita feel any better.

The more he stayed down here the more he regrets not leaving this hell. How much could they take before they call it quits and walk out with their skins.

The drowussu guide shuddered. This place would surely lead them to madness....sometimes it was indeed better to leave things forgotten. Hindrvitni moved away from the group and towards the exit, yet she hesitated. "I'd say it would be better for us to leave, but that would be giving in to paranoia."

The hair stood up at the back of her neck at the following noise; a bloodcurdling scream that pierced the hallway's silence and echoed down its walls.

((Late, again. I know. :/ ))

"As if on cue, just like a damn horror play...." Durlyn grumbled under his breath at the ghastly sound of that scream, wondering who or what it had come from but knowing it would probably be wiser to just leave now while they could and leave this mystery unsolved until they could come back with more troops to back them up.

"So, we gonna do the smart thing and leave well enough alone or are we gonna play hero and wander off in search of something that probably wants to kill us?" Dur asked sarcastically, normally always itching for a fight but knowing this cave was particularly bad news with all its crazy tricks and quirks thus far.

Trinita had a white streak chill down his spine as the heard the scream. "What if its a trap?" he said to the others. It had to be them. There is no way the Nals are still around here if that stiff body was as old as it was.

He moved behind Hindrvitni but kept looking over his shoulder expecting someone or something to come down the hall or where ever the hell this noise is coming from "I agree, were in over our heads. Lets get out." Trinita hoped this wouldn't split the party, he didn't want to make a bad guy out of himself or anyone who disagreed with leaving. Moral was low, it was hard to admit that to himself.

Vithar turned down the hallway to face the direction from where the hideous scream that echoed in the immense arching hall had come. Could there be some Nal'sarkoth Stalkers still alive and in danger? Vithar quickly made his mind up on the next move. "Come on...whoever made that scream needs our help!" grunted the Highland Raider as he started to walk down the hall to find whoever cried out.

"We find them and get them out of here. To the hell fires with this city!" The unexplainable events of the past few minutes had put them all on edge. The Nal'sarkoth who had reached D'ulkunde before them had not heeded the warnings of the ancients, and now they had paid the price...here, within the Stygian catacombs of D'ulkunde. Vithar made no other comment. He did not like the breathless silence that had heretofore brooded over the ancient halls, but the accursed scream was hardly an improvement.
